Incoming Skydweller/ sent back due to defect!

Crazy experience today at my AD. I popped in to try on some watches. I had a great time, and then I was surprised to find out that my black dial Sky D had arrived.

I was taking off the stickers when I noticed the watch had someones name and birthday engraved on the back.

The AD did not do this, it came from Rolex with someones name on it.

Has anybody every heard of something like this?

I am not that upset, just puzzled.

I'd like to see a photo. I don't believe this was done by Rolex, fwiw.

Can’t imagine Rolex did the engraving. Perhaps the AD had it done for someone and they backed out of the deal. That’s the only thing I can figure.

When I was browsing for a PM piece, the AD offered to "make the deal sweeter" by engraving it for free.. I don't think Rolex engraves watches from the factory so definitely really weird.

hmm very strange...but you could easily find out, by suggesting to write to Rolex ...if the Ad engraved it ,he would probably immidiately suggest to get you the next one, as he wouldnt want any trouble with Rolex.....

Pieces don't come engraved from Rolex, it's the ADs who might do it on request. My inkling is someone backed out after it was engraved and they tried to palm it off on to you, hoping you wouldn't notice.

Has to be the AD, no other explanation fits the situation as Rolex definitely does not engrave for anyone, unless the person is from a Royal family or a world renowned professional. Gotta be the AD, who must have engraved for someone who backed outa the deal.

If the AD did it then why would the sticker be on top?

Also is it really realistic that they would try to "palm it off" on me? Surly I would notice.

If it was the AD, would the customer not have to pay for the watch before it was engraved?

They were very surprised and never suggested that I should take the watch. I offered to take it if they sold me a Daytona!

They probably just forgot they had the watch engraved for another client who backed out/obtained a refund for whatever reason. As mentioned by another poster, it was likely done to 'sweeten the deal'. Case back can easily be replaced and they'll probably flog you the next one they get in.

That seems like a possibility. I googled the name and the person had no online presence.

Interesting! Did they offer you anything due to the situation? OR provide you with a timeline for the next one to arrive? What is the outcome?

Can the case back be replaced and still sold as new?

Ouch, that is a weird scenario.. the AD trying to swing it off to you hoping you didn't notice the engraving seems too weird.. how can somebody not notice an engraving

Odd for sure. I’d have asked the AD to save me a few bucks and taken it. You can always get a new case back or polish the engraving out.

As another poster mentioned sounds like a return or some type of mistake. Wonder what will become of watch?

I would have taken the watch with a $500 discount and a new case back ordered/installed by AD.

Sounds like the AD had one engraved and then gave them yours and you theirs?
AFAIK, Rolex don't engrave individual watches unless you have won the Daytona (car race not watch)

Who the heck isn't going to notice an engraving on the caseback???

Very strange. Has the warranty card already been activated on the watch? I can't imagine they would engrave until the original transaction was complete. And if the original transaction was complete wouldn't they need to activate the warranty card?

I wonder if it was returned to rolex by an ad, perhaps one who lost dealership and was pushed straight back out to your AD. Either that or a chain or dealers and stock transferred across so your AD had no idea of the engraving. Never heard of this before.

If so, most plausible explanation.

Anything especially unique about Rolex factory engraving?

Nope. Just last name on case back. My wife worked at AD at the time so warranty also show RUSA as AD....direct purchase from Rolex.

RUSA would have organised the engraving rather than Rolex SA.
