I'm looking to get my Daytona authenticated in the UK
I've got the receipt and all the paperwork from where I bought it but the buyer wants it authenticated. Anywhere in the uk, preferably in the midlands, known?

There's no shortage of offers and questions from potential buyers when it comes to advertising a coveted Rolex online. If your description and pictures of the watch are clear you'll realise that a serious buyer will buy with no or minimal questions asked.

Yes tricky one but I think the way it works is caveat emptor (buyer beware).

It’s up to him to do due diligence at the point of sale (or before) but that doesn’t include you trying to find a jeweller who provides a verification only service (surprisingly few do).

I would offer a money back arrangement if you trust the guy but then you open yourself up to risk - like someone swapping the movement for a damaged or fake one or just returning you a fake watch.

If he wants a risk free purchase he should go to an AD, by going private sale he needs to accept an element of risk and offset that with his ability to spot a genuine piece.

You’re the one doing him a favour by selling him a nice Daytona.

Perhaps this buyer would like to have a swim in a lake while another buyer snaps up your watch?

Failing that you could ask the buyer to authenticate it if that is what he wants.

Sell him the watch and tell him to get a service quote from RSC, if they give him one the watch checks out, if not then you will refund him.

I bought it only a few months ago from a store (not an ad) who offered me a full warranty with receipts etc. If it was wonky I would gladly take it back, go back to the store and claim a full refund so I'm very comfortable with its heritage. Might have to have a word in his shell I think.

I do think you could probably find another buyer easily enough, but I don't think the request is so unreasonable. And the answer is... any reputable watchmaker. Almost any competent watchmaker will be very familiar with Rolexes, and can confirm visually and by popping the back.

I’ve been offered the services of a licenced estate jewellery service. They keep the watch two weeks and conduct serial number searches, a detailed report exam of the watch for about $175. Rolex won’t go near authenticating anything unless on the sky - ask for a time keeping check etc and if they check it, it’s real.

If I was buying a Rolex privately, I'd have it authenticated on receipt, regardless of what paperwork and RSC literature came with the watch.

Buy the buyer! This sounds like potential trouble. Why go there?
