2016 BMW 535i XDrive...

I’m a car guy. Always have had Toyota’s for reliability and currently have a 2017 Touareg and love it. Lease is coming up and I may buy it out. Anyone have any experience with BMW 535i with the 3.0 liter biturbo? Thinking of a 2016 with low miles. Would buy it CPO.

Sadly no. I had a diesel and totaled it. New diesels were on stop sale so I replaced it with the gas version.

Hmm, too bad. I loved the TDI version, regardless of the whole dieselgate scandal.

Still, I would keep your Treg. Great SUVs and I would not pick an X5 over one. JMO.

Lets face it, hard to compete with Toyota / Honda reliability. Have a 435i so same engine and 8AT and it is a great car. Very tweakable and is a driver's car, versus a Toyota grocery-getter.

If you want reliability alone, keep the Toyota / Honda. If you want a driver's car, BMW of course and then may as well do some bolt-on engine mods. Have the 435i's 6-cyl 3L engine up from 300/300 stock to 450HP / 425TQ using Dinan Stage 4. Using Dinan means car is still under warranty too :)

Being CPO & you being a car guy if you pick a nicely kept one you should be good to go. That warranty is great double check if its CPO for 1 or 2 years. Also look into the maintenance plan if offered, it might make sense to match the cpo warranty so the only thing you will be paying is the CPO charge for 1/2 years when bringing it in. Before pulling the trigger check the service history if the brakes were done recently I would probably pass. If not its an easy buy.

The year/model your after has a N55 motor so its a twin scroll single turbo, so as far as reliability its a bit more solid then the N54.

The 5 is a great car for what it is, I owned one but it was too big for me. Didn't make it a bad car but not a car for me.

Very luxurious, drives better than the MB & Audi - it has AWD which NEVER left me stranded and I kept the stock AS rubber on, I took it through some +15/20 inch storm with no problem at all.

P.S. German vehicles are temperamental and MUCH more expensive to fix when out of warranty. It will never have the Honda/Toyota reliability aspect. For me the drive, fit & finish, & overall experience are worth more than my last sentence.

Then keep it for sure. Wife has a 2013 BMW X1 (Mini platform, RWD) and it's a hoot to drive. These smaller SUVs can indeed be a fun drive. So yeah, keep the Touareg as you know her well. Yet if you ever decide BMW...

PS: As Ballzzz said, the N55 / 8AT combo is a very solid package.

We loved ours up until the end when there was a door latch fault. In cold weather the door wouldn’t fully close and once it did we couldn’t get it to open. Great car but I wouldn’t own it for 15 minutes out of warranty.

My Touareg is fantastic. Favorite vehicle of all time. I’d get a new one but they are no longer imported into the US. I would def put 100,000 mile warranty on it.

So was mine. New 2008-2018- I believe it had a 4 year factory warranty and at 3 years 10 months I added 5 year everything extended warranty for 1200.00.
Never used it and sold it at 51,000 miles. Mint condition. It was a beast. Chewed up breaks and tires religiously every 15,000 to 20,000 miles though. Pure city driving. 13 miles a gallon 😂

In 2018 with all the new electronic gadgets that are available I sold it for a more gadget friendly non VW SUV. Love this one too. I’ve had the new one for 11 months and have 2000 miles on it

Almost bought a 2018 Tiguan but the new body style was changed or just ready to change in 2019. Totally ruined it for me.

The new one only sold in the EU is a very, very nice SUV.

I wish I knew more about the 5-series but no direct experience. But I’m sure it’s nice, Shannon.

535i is a very large car. It is very comfortable, but you need to decide if its size suits you.

I am done with CPO BMWs. I am currently on my 6th BMW, this time I leased a 2018 X5 Diesel that replaced my CPO 2013 X5 that the warranty was ending on. I would have kept the 2013 longer had I not had several issues that were thankfully covered under the warranty. Between the historical costs, projected future costs that I knew were likely to occur (water pump and suspension wear), the depreciation hit, and the inconvenience of suffering a breakdown I decided to go new. Good luck and hopefully you get a good one if you decide to go the CPO route.

VW quit importing the Touareg into the US market in 2017. The 2018 Atlas replaced it. The Touareg has a much more German car feel to it. The Atlas is very Americanized. It’s built purely for the North American market. I’m leaning towards buying out my lease and putting a warranty on the Touareg. I love everything about it.
