Good practice with AD

Looking for any opinions on if it’s good practice to hand in a bottle of bubbly to my AD for getting me my Explorer 214270. I put my name down 2 months ago and they turned one up for me on Thursday past, which here in the UK is extremely quick. I also asked the guy I was dealing with if he could get me a couple of Rolex spring bars for my 14060M, they phoned today to say they had those for me too....so when I go in tomorrow I was gonna hand in a bottle of bubbly to the guy I was dealing with, he’s been brilliant.....good idea or not?

He should be giving you a bottle of bubbly for the honor of giving him the sale.

I see no harm in being gracious.

I bought my AD a small gift last Christmas as they had sold me a SS Sub Date and then a Daytona 519 in early December. 2 weeks later I got a call for a ceramic white Daytona.

They in turn gave me a nice bottle of bubbly and a Rolex umberela

I like to massage my AD's feet and put cucumbers under his eyes as I play Kenny G from my iPhone. Some of you guys are weird.

absolutely.

I just bought a gift card for the guy that helped us with our blinds. He was super nice. I was happy to do it.

And likely I will never deal with him ever again.

Are times that desperate that rather than us get a bottle, we now bring them to AD’s?

I think it’s a nice gesture. Particularly since he’s helping you get hold of parts.

Small (and inexpensive) gestures like this are a very nice break from the usual entitled attitudes from people that think they are doing the sales people a favour by wanting to buy a watch from them.

always be nice to the AD. As the market is TODAY they have buyers for all steel watches especially the Daytonas, GMTs etc etc. NOBODY walk into an AD and gets a Daytona etc without a relationship. Most ADs are small business and they want to deal with nice people and people who love the watches ( not flippers).

How is it any different to any other tip given in exchange for good service?

I suppose this is a cultural difference. Where I live tipping is not normal.

In regions where tipping is normal I can understand it when it applies to waiters at restaurants. Sellers of luxury goods are entirely different and the mere act of buying an item which gives them thousands of $ of profit should be more than sufficient. The current trend towards scraping and groveling before shopkeepers is baffling to me, since I would never stoop to such behavior.

The person that sells the watch is very unlikely to be the store owner. That’s like assuming your waiter is the restaurant owner. Both can happen, but in reality both owners are more likely to employ people on fairly low wages to do the work.

As you say, different cultures view this thing differently and I respect that. In some countries tipping is disrespectful.

But acting like shop staff should worship you for blessing their store with your money is petty and disrespectful too. I’d rather lose a customer than pander to a client that needs to feel superior than the person serving them.

Agree 100%. I always treat people as my equal unless they give me reason not to. Funnily enough that leads to other people normally treating me politely and as their equal, so it works both ways. Of course I have no reason to feel inferior or superior to someone who is a complete stranger, so I won't treat them as though they are inferior or superior.

If people feel inclined to give some special consideration or service to a person who sells them luxury goods they are certainly free to do so. It is just not what I would do.

This is just about buying a watch. Why does it have to be so hard and complicated? I would feel like a twit if I groveled before the shopkeeper and gave him a bottle of champagne for taking my money. I really would.

Nothing wrong for those that went above and beyond for you. Granted he didn't hand deliver anything or stay open late one night so you could pick it up before you left for a holiday or something. Nothing wrong.

Just be aware of the perception of colleagues seeing you hand a gift over. Reminds me of a time at the office I gave a consultant a small thank you gift and the funny shit that her colleague assumed

A nice gesture is a discount from an AD.
I have never given any ADs gifts as a sign of gratitude.I give them my business and future business.
The market is so screwed because clients forget that the one with the money in hand ,has the power.
What we have now is groveling Rolex buyers that's unbecoming the heritage and status of the brand.Don't lose your dignity.

Of course. And because we are so much better than they are at being human, they should be groveling and thanking us profusely. I mean, we won we have the money to buy their goods. We are superior.

I honestly find it distasteful to even have to speak with them. I would prefer it if I could just send them an email with my demands.

I mean, who are these “people” that work at AD’s. Ha. People. That’s a laugh. Who do they think they are, and why would we lower ourselves by showing them a level or appreciation and respect.

Jeeze. The people that actually show a bit of gratitude are making us all look bad. And it needs to stop.
