Traveling with the Rolex (TSA)

So I'll be traveling for the first time with my Rolex. With my cheaper watches, I just threw it in the bin to go through the x-ray machine. I feel a little uncomfortable doing that with my Rolex. Do you guys just wear your Rolex's through the checkpoints? What do you do if the TSA asks you to take off your watch?

Same. Flew today from Spain to uk. Wore it no problems.

Same. Never had to take off SS or PM when heading through the metal detector. I fly 90 percent domestic US and on the rare occasion I don’t get TSA pre-check, they will quickly look at the watch on my wrist during the full scan

+1 I have never been asked to take it off. But take it easy if you have too, there are cameras everywhere

Depends the country, in less secure countries I use to put it in my laptop bag but in Europe and others just throw in the bin. The best is probably to put in laptop bag always.

You can always just put it in your backpack beforehand, if you're worried.

I've never been asked to do anything with my watch. Even if I had to take it off I'd just put it in the bin or better yet put it in my backpack real quick. Do watches really get stolen from TSA??

Just la couple weeks ago at the Colorado Springs Airport....I didn't have my Rolex on, I had my TAG Formula 1 on,wore it through and they asked me to take that off and my belt too!!

This is why I bury mine in bottom of my bag in a watchcase before security and take it out after ive passed through. Very rare but some places insist so I would rather have it safe and already put away rather then being shouted at and rushed to just chuck it carelessly in a tray

It depends which airport. At London Stansted they were really panicking and asked me to put my watch in my bag at the x-ray. But several airports are well willing when i keep it on my wrist.

Pretty simple. I fly internationally all the time.

Buy a small watch travel case, put watch in case before airport, put watch case in carry-on bag, and go through security without having to worry about it.

Hundreds of flights, 0 problems.

Did that with a watch roll and was told that on the x-ray machine, "small cylinders with metallic components inside them look like something we don't want to see."

I don't bring watch rolls anymore. I use one of those little travel cases now or just wear it on my wrist (I've also NEVER been asked to take my watch off and if they did say something I'd request a pat down instead of the scanner).

This, is the solution if you are worried. I can’t remember the last time I was asked to remove my watch, but why take chances.

I think it is fine to go through the regular metal detectors and will not set them off, but the more advanced full-body scanners could be a problem. TSA may make you take it off, in which case I personally would not want it "naked" in a plastic dish that could overturn and have the watch go into the belt/rollers, etc. So I would try to have a plan B like a protected container I could put it in inside my luggage.

When it set the body scanner off they asked me to show them my wrist and once to unclasp the bracelet.

Watches won't set off the metal detector.

I usually ignore TSA or foreign security agents when they say take of watches, belts, etc. I try to quickly walk through before they can say anything and not once has my watch set off the metal detector. That applies for my Omega PloPloff (which is a serious chunk of steel). Most domestic (US) TSA agents will not ask or require removing your watch. In the times a security person has seen my watch and asked me to take it off I ask if they will manually pat me down. Better to be safe than sorry. The last thing you want is to get stopped (for having something metal or for random screening) and have your watch continue on the belt without you, running the risk of someone grabbing it, be a fellow traveler or agent.

I was travelling through Atlanta Airport a few years ago wearing flip flops. The TSA agent asked me to remove them and put them the tray. I thought he was joking and ignored him. He then said "Sir - I won't ask you again" and blocked the entrance to the scanner.

I actually had the opposite experience coming back from Vegas a few months ago. People could leave their watches on while going through the full body scanners, but had to take them off if going through a regular metal detector. For simplicity, I just keep mine in an Omega service case stored inside a carry-on backpack until I’m through security.

This has been my experience too. When I have had to take it off for a metal detector, I usually put it in my backpack, but I've also just left it in a tray by itself several times.

just get a small travel case or pouch (or hell, use a sock) - put the watch in it and put in your carry on prior to entering security, go through security, put watch back on. voila! i always do that, never a problem.

I would not be worried about theft, more worried about someone dropping it or knocking over the tray its in.

That said, I have always worn mine and never take it off (Domestic or Internationally)
