From an aesthetic perspective yes. I personally prefer the version without the etching. As other people have said it does make it look more "blingy" and I know it's an original and a Rolex so I don't need reminding. I do, however, like the coronet etched on the glass which I think is a savvy way of protecting the brand. I also feel that the etching changes the balance of the face and therefore the look. Merely a personal preference though, I admit.

Reminds me of when Ray Ban began adding their logo to the lens in the early 90's. I got my first couple pairs in college, late 80’s, before they did that (Yes I’m that age and got them after Top Gun came out) but didn't like the way it looked on the "new" ones I got later – thought it took away from their classic look - but with a cotton ball and some nail polish remover that was easily taken care of.

For the companies it’s about marketing and improving brand recognition while maintaining the traditional look of their product which can be a very delicate balancing act. In particular with a durable item like a Rolex watch “they” have to give “us” a reason to buy a new one when we already have one. Concerns over counterfeiting aside which, while a real concern for Rolex is not the driving factor behind the new look, if you’re the kind of person who has to have the newest model that will work, if you’re not it won’t.

JEEP went through it with the round to square then back to round headlights after their sales went down, remember the “Real JEEPS have round headlights” stickers.

If enough consumers don’t like it and show that buy not buying them it will go away, if sales are steady or improve it will stay.

Honestly, I'd rather the Explorer have it as well, but it's such a trivial thing that it means very little to me.

Only insofar as it indicates the newness of the watch, ie. if I was to buy a new watch today, I would want it to be the absolute latest version and if this means it must have the inscription, then so be it.

its, NOT IMPORTANT, but any means...but it looks GREAT, if we go back in time to 5 years ago...and a daytona didnt have it, i wouldnt have cared, i still don,t but i kinda think its sexy, its nice....hmm...the only advantage of it not being there is u can walk into the AD and ask him for a greater discount cuz its old stock,....man i'm confused...Singslinger says it best...

I personally think its very tacky but agree with serial and perhaps the model number, but just the word Rolex once on the dial is good enough for me.The most important thing with any watch is its engine and not case graffiti, or any other minor details.

Whenever I see a Rolex without it I think "old model", so yes it does matter to me.

I would never buy a Rolex without it or with the old clasp-type. I know I would have regretet it everytime I saw another Rolex with the new "features".

Older case perhaps but model no, basically most Rolex sports and watches have changed very very little since 1989. Except for non lug hole case and biggest improvement the SEL bracelet, others are just purely cosmetic. The most important part the movement is the same in most cases as the ones from 1989. Or just slightly modified with say in-house hairspring or with the GMT slightly more precise dual time zone adjustment.

You know, i did not even realise that the ROLEXROLEXROLEX was on the DSSD ringlock, until i was using a cheap ass road directory magnification strip, trying to look for the serial number and the coronet etching. I guess its because the face of the ring lock is perpendicular to the watch face so its not that noticeable and the printing is not that distinct. However, on an angled rehaute and clear fonts, i may have a second thought.

Will answer the same than in other post of today about rehaute:

"My just bought Z series SD (serial 9xx,xxx) has not rehaute ring.

I prefer watches without the rehaut. Think they are more classic.
I personally feel that this was not such a good idea for Rolex to introduce this feature.

Anyway, that´s something we have to learn to live with: My four latest Rolex purchases (Explorer, Daytona, DSSD and Sub no date) all came with the rehaute ring."

It seems that Rolex -my beloved watch brand- has a marked tendency to "over write" and saturate their beautiful dials, with inscriptions.

I don´t like them very much!

Just compare the "clean" dial of an old model of Daytona, with present ones, or a vintage Sub no date with the present time COSC 14060m.
Which do you like most?

I guess if Rolex would put all this inscriptions, regarding de Superlative chronometer, and offcially certfied, on the back of the case, as Omega does in some models, as an example. I feel this would be more elegant, and the dial plainer and classy.

Just a personal point of view.

Only two of my watches have it and honestly the only time I ever notice is if I'm looking through the camera or the loupe. Day to day I never notice it and that's fine. I could live with or without it.

After my watch is purchased, interest in a readily-visible serial number might diminish.

I like it, actually on the DeepSea its hardly noticeable, the domed crystal distortes the angle of view making it harder to notice the rehaut.
