"Is that Rolex REAL?" - Question

Reading many of the thread on this forum and my own experience, it seems like us Rolex wearers often gets asked the question...

I always just politely say "no..." and move on...I ain't that creative...

I am curious to see how the rest of you respond to that question...and I am sure this will have many funny responses...

I've honestly never been asked that question. Only a rude person would ask such a thing.

I too have never been asked that question. Funnily, I was having a conversation with a fellow Rolex guy and an acquaintance of ours showed up. He had a Cartier on his wrist. The first question the other guy shot off was "is that real?" to which he replied "no, I paid $50 for it".

I too would never ask if a watch is real as I wouldn't want to embarrass anyone.

"Is it a Rolex?" That, I get asked more than "Is it a real Rolex?". I answered "Yes" to both question, and asked them back "You want it, I'll sell you for $65!" Then, they want to take a closer look and still scratch their heads! I loved it!

Some people just can't comprehent why we paid that much $$$$ for a watch (include my wife) but when we talked about what are your passions in life....(Big house, expensive car, exortic vacations, diamonds, home theaters, etc...) owning Rolexes is just one of those! Now, I just give me a justifcation for go out and get my Explore-II ! :-)

sometimes ppl ask not because they are thinking that you intentionally bought a fake watch, but at awe of the fact that they might be seeing a real one

I have not been asked yet but if I am ever asked I will tell them yes and then try to change the subject unless they are into watches and own one otherwise you may sound like a rich tool even if it is a simple 4 or 5 thousand dollar Rolex. I have the feeling people would get weird about this sort of thing and not understand. On the other hand look at how easy it is for us all to talk to each other this is a comfortable situation as we all share a similar interest. I guess I would want to know why they ask and if this could not be determined then I would say yes and quickly change the subject.

I have never been asked that question either, buy would answer truthfully, Yes it is, and be real proud of it. Most of us work hard for our money and me....i'm proud of Rolex...and other watches. Wear it and smile. You earned it and you paid for it.

I have never been asked about my watch but I do wear it on the inside of my wrist!!! But I do get asked about the five expensive diamonds in my pierced left ear,Sometimes I tell them they are real or fake depending on the situation. I do get a lot of looks though from people I pass. Hey I got an idea maybe JJ should pierce his ear!!!

I have only been asked that question one time and it was in the hallway outside the courtroom by another lawyer that fancies himself to be a super lawyer. I was wearing my GMT IIC and he was wearing an SS Datejust w/the bullseye dial. When he asked me he had a smart ass smirk on his face, as if to say "nice fake Rolex".

I politely told him that yes it was real, and in fact one of the most desireable and hard to find sport models (this was over a year and a half ago).

I went on to tell him that I really liked his watch and that it is "one of my favorite ENTRY LEVEL Rolexes" (not intended to offend any DJ owners here but the guy just pissed me off so I had to get a dig in).

The only time I've been asked was when I was looking at fakes in Mexico. The seller saw mine on my wrist.

I answered "no, it was not real".

Personally, I've never been asked that question. However, I have a friend who has, and his standard reply is "People who ask are usually those who buy fakes''.

usually if asked, it is by someone with knowledge of watches or a rolex wearer themselves. I answer honestly and use it as a reason to talk about rolexes.

Im a college student so I get that all the time. Ive been fortunate and Ive got a Presidential, a Sub, and a couple Datejust'; but my answer is always "yes" except when I have the Presidential on, when I wear it I claim it as a gift that I know nothing about, unless its a watch nut like myself

Unless I'm mistaken, I beleive the GMT IIC and the SS Datejust are not miles apart in price. Therefore, I really don't believe either one would be considered an entry level item, compared to the other.

And, the appropriate answer to the rude question in the first place, is a simple yes.
