Incoming!!! (Not Rolex)

Hey guys!
I a pretty new member lurking for a while and figured i share my store. I have been looking for a white skydweller for a few months making contacts and building relationships with big and small ADs in the Tri-State area. I have been looking to buy this watch for a major life event and wanted to commemorate it with a significant watch. Told my story to all of these ADs. Don’t bother going into the Rolex dealer on 5th ave. It’s a waste of time and they all don’t care. They definitely have the most allocations, but are the biggest liers. My advise is don’t bother trying to enter the Rolex world through AD if you are looking for a steel watch. I feel like all the watches end up on 47th street (greys). I can’t imagine anyone purchasing a PM piece only to buy a steel piece. It just takes away from appreciating each individual watch. I still wanted something unique that i would someday pass down. I went into an AP AD thinking i would get the same treatment as the Rolex HQ. I was treated with respect and they actually have watches to try on! The salesperson told me they were “display pieces”. At first i was in the Rolex mindset thinking this is BS and he would sell one to me if i purchased a Tourbillon piece, but after closer inspection they did have a few minor nicks, and just didn’t feel brand new. I simply wanted to try on a 41mm royal oak. He had one of each 15500 to try one. I noticed he was wearing a white 15400 and i commented on it. He almost immediately asked me if i would like to try it on. I was immediately sold. White was the color i wanted. I expressed that to him, but he gave me the same shpeel. They are all sold; no more allocations, etc etc.
A week later after looking on Chrono24, I contacted the same salesperson and asked if they would be able to authenticate a watch purchased from a grey. He said yes, but then asked me what i was about to pay for the 15400. He told me to hold off on buying it and that he would get back to me because he may have one to sell me. Long store short, i picked it up two days later and could not be happier. It initially upset my that i couldn’t get into the Rolex world, but i guess a rose gold skydweller will be my first Rolex, hopefully for my 50th birthday; in twenty years ;)
Good luck out there, the watch you want is waiting for you at the right place at the right time. It is always worth it to wait.

Congrats! Great looking piece! The difficulty of getting a Rolex is turning people to other excellent brands. It did for me certainly.

Wait, the AP AD had a 15400 in stock....how does that work? Was it new with your name on the papers? But in any case, congrats! The silver dial 15400 was the most beautiful dial they made in my opinion. So much character. Wear it in good health

The dealer had it in stock and i bought it brand new with my name on all the paper work. It was what i actually wanted; box, papers in my name, and even a shopping bag ;)

I actually went into a Rolex AD immediately after with the shopping bag and was immediately approached by a salesman there, even though they didn’t have anything in stock.

Wow nice find. I tried finding a brand new 15400 earlier this year with no luck. It’s also quite amusing how sales people size you up when you walk through the door and they see $$$$$

Congratulations! Looks great on - the white dial really sparkles in the light.

Yes also curious as wasn’t fully clear - was it new or pre-owned from the AD?

Thank you!

Brand new from the boutique. He told me happened to get one in and that he was waiting to get approval to sell it to me. It’s all a game, but i get it. They want the watch at an end user’s wrist.

Great catch! I just saw an old beater Ap RO white dial worn by a friend. It immediately sang to me.

Congrats my friend. I too am a lucky owner of the silver dial 15400 and after a quick year, I am still in the honeymoon phase.

Be sure to wear it whenever visiting a dealer in the future. I promise you will get taken seriously :)

Such a beautiful watch. I’m looking at getting into the AP market here soon with a steel piece. This gives me hope that it’s easier than the current Rolex nonsense.

Also seems like our positions are opposites. I was primarily looking for a steel AP RO during my vacation, but came across a white SS SkyD while strolling through the Rolex store and scooped it up! It was the next Rolex I wanted, but didn’t expect to find at all.

Thank you!!

Our stories and similar stories prove (to me) that most of the people buying are buying out of hype. I feel these dealers have an easy time selling their watches, so why bother calling someone who is on “a list”. I feel that list is for watches that don’t sell in the case after a week or two. The dealers are just getting free leads. One day the hype will settle and these salespeople will have to sit there and call everyone, which is probably why they are done taking down names for their lists.

A great story!

I originally hunted the silver dial one but walked away with Ruthenium 15400. Bought 15450 silver for my wife though.

Awesome piece, you'll not regret it. Enjoy!
