Lume on Hands

I tried on my friends Sub the other day. It was purchased in 1989 and has only been serviced 2x. You will notice the lines are well on their way to getting nice and creamy. However, the hands show almost no aging. They have never been replaced and was wondering why there’s is such a contrast. I’ve seen this on other vintage Rolexes on the For Sale Forum with this contrast and just assumed the hands have been replaced. My friend assures me he has not. Any thoughts on why this would be the case? Could it be the difference in surface material in contact with the lume? Gold on the Hands v material on the face?

Lume on Hands

Not sure how he can guaranteed the hands were not replaced from 2x service. I think it has been replaced before.

Most collectors want matching color.

Most buyers are not "collectors". It is a very common watch of relatively recent vintage. To most buyers, the date of last service is more important than whether the hands match the worn out tritium on the dial. The likelihood of a watch with the dial, bezel, and hands all matching never having been serviced by RSC is pretty high.

The hands and bezel insert have been replaced. Your friend may not even realize it was done during service.

Replaced by RCS and not charged.

Ask him if there is still lume in the hands. Sure sign of replacement.

Tritium has about a 10 yr lifespan. If the hands still glow in the dark, easy to do the math.

Tritium dial and Luminova hands and bezelinsert. Just point a flashlight against the dial and the hands and bezel dot will glow, not the index's at the dial.

As you can see by the 2012 invoice (the first service had done and he’s original owner), he declined to have the hands replace as recommend. I can’t believe Rolex would replace hands ‘no charge’. Apparently they did???

While I agree they have probably been replaced, it's not uncommon for different parts of the watch to age at different rates. Dials, hands and inserts could have all had different batches of tritium and been produced at different times.

Do they glow at all?
