15400 vs 15500 secondary market prices
Hi all!
Through my shopping around, I have found prices on the secondary market for the 15400 and 15500 (similar dial colours) to be somewhat comparable, with some instances of the 15400 even being slightly higher. Now considering that the 15500 pieces are not only newer but also have a significantly higher retail price, does that make it of better value? Why has the value of the 15400 been so stable even after the release of the newer 15500? I suppose most people still prefer the 15400? but why though? Thanks for satisfying my curiosity in advance! |

Yeah, I'm a bit curious about this one. DavidSW has both a black 15400 and a 15500 and the 15400 is more expensive. Doesn't make much sense, given the new movement, etc.

Once something is discoed dealers will look to raise prices, whether demand will remain high enough once enough 500s hit the market is the question of where future 400 prices go.

Comes down to the whole 'discontinued' status and preferences.
I find the new dial to be a bit less balanced than the 15400 in pictures (haven't seen a 500 in the flesh). More 15500s will be produced whereas all the 15400s that will be produced are already out there. We all know how 'discontinued' status can also cause values of less valuable pieces to shoot up, even some that have been mass produced for years. |

Definitely the discontinued status plays a part.. but also, because the 500 can be difficult to acquire through a boutique, some may look towards the 400 as an alternative

For me at least the 500 is significantly less appealing than the 400, due to the new dial design.

The 15400 is just the nicer watch

that is a white glove treated royal oak. My traveled, dailyied and dinged silver dialed 15400 is not as pristine... To my defence, when I bought mine it was close to $10k brand new and therefore bought as something not worth treating as "special".
To the topic on hand: Im obviously biased but In my opinion the 15400 is better than the 15500 due to it being thinner and therefore slightly more elegant.

I heavily prefer the 15400 after getting my hands on the 15500. As a 15400 owner, I considered swapping it out for the new model but decided not to.
Additionally, if we are talking about the silver dial specifically, I expect that models value to increase disproportionally to the rest of the 15400 line. |

However biased I may be, I also prefer the dial layout on the 15400. Add that to its discontinued status and you have prime hyping material for sellers.

I looked at trading up my 15400 for a 15500 but after looking decided to keep the 15400. I prefer the older style dial. Plus no more white/silver dials.

Yeap at this point, it is the discontinued status that generally values the 15400 more than the 15500. With the exception of not having the white/silver color, the dial differences are subtle.

I also prefer the 15400 dial and like the solid end of the seconds hand (I know nit picking). What about the 2ndary prices with the blue dial 15400 vs 15500?

Some say isn't it cleaner to not have the word "Automatic"? To me without it, the dial looks too sparse. Also to us WIS its redundant but to the average lay person and say some chick you want to pick up at the bar - "automatic" can sound impressive and you can then go into a 5 min spew on the difference between quartz and mechanical (I am half joking and half serious). This panty dropping ploy is enough to tip the scales in the 15400's favor. Second, with a date window already breaking up the symmery of the dial, a centrally placed automatic increases symmetry not reduces it. It's the 15400 for me. Movement and power reserve better on 15500 but I would go 15400 and white dial. |

I think the 15400 will settle in below the 15500 by winter. I see the 15500 as a minor but welcome tweak similar to the 116520>116500

As far as the dial looking too sparse, check out GB Man's wrist shot. Looks perfect to me. So much love for the white dial, I think in large part because it's now gone. It's nice, but prior to the discontinuation, I don't think it was the most popular dial in the 15400ST lineup. Beautiful! |

Is the black harder to get than the white? How about the black vs. the grey?

The 15500 dial looks bare. They need to add something on the bottom half of the dial
