What To Do
I am looking to buy a new Submariner Date, GMT Master II, or Explorer II Polar. This would be my first Rolex purchase (really my first watch purchase period) and want to go new. However, I have been to 6 ADs and the best answer I have received is "at least a 2 year wait". I thought about going grey, but the thought of paying 2-5k over retail hurts. Would you:

I’d wait it out and see what happens. The Tudors you listed are fantastic watches but they won’t scratch the Rolex itch.

I’m waiting it out too. But Rolex 216570 Explorer II isn’t too far off from grey if u shop around. That’s a great watch.

If you’re a patient man, I would wait it out. If not, then go gray.

Deceide if you want a sub, gmt or the explorer and then buy from a trusted seller would be my advice.
You could be waiting a long time GMT LN is no longer in production so you might have to go grey anyway. Good Luck |

Stop in as many places in person as you can and give them your info and say you're looking for a Sub or an explorer II. Omit the GMT as that ship has most likely sailed.
Give it a month or two and see what happens and then reassess. |

Difficult time for the first time buyer .Just remember,ADs WANT so sell to first time buyers but have difficulty with the awful flipper ....
I would suggest the following .. Go long term and buy a DJ41 Jubilee now.Excellent design !! Wait patiently for a sports model of your choice,it will come .Then you have a great two watch collection . Dont go grey .I never have and never will on Rolex ,unless they have something you want at less than MRSP . |

I'd continue stopping by AD shops in-person. As some have said, the GMT II is going to be a lot tougher to acquire in the current market. That being said, once you share with someone at an AD what you're interested in and get their "rinse and repeat" decline response, maybe follow up with an acknowledgement of the GMT being a long wait but seeing if the waits are at least a lot better for the Sub or the Exp II. I have a really hard time believing wait times for either of those watches is 2 years now...

216570 Should be had more easily from AD. Just be honest and wait
Pelagos blue/black are fantastic watches - I wouldnt sell that if I bought it in the interim. Submariner and GMT, I wouldnt wait for.. But you can find TT GMT's available. Whichever way you swing it you can get a great watch in the near future without grey market punishment. |

I would wait it out - I think a two year wait for a Sub or Explorer II is excessive and you're likely to be able to source much sooner than that. If you like the other options as part of a collection, they are great pieces but don't look at them solely as holdovers because that will not give you a feeling of satisfaction once the novelty as worn off. Good luck

Get what you want or something near or second to what you want. You may consider buying "something" from your AD just to build some rapport or "relationship" Be nice to them. Politeness and respect is well reciprocated. Cheers |

I’ve seen an explorer in an AD case within the last 6 months. I think you’ve gotta look a little harder or step up to a two tone for new. Why are you so hung up on buying a brand new watch? These last for decades and longer - often outlasting their owners. Why not purchase a pre-loved time piece?

I’d try to work with a smaller AD and build a rapport with them. I believe a Submariner or Explorer will show up sooner than what you’ve been quoted.
Also, there’s a big difference to visiting an AD in person vs. calling. Good luck |

welcome to TRF
As you've established, there is certainly a wait at the moment. 2 years may be a bit strong and worse case to be honest. If you can, add a black bay in the meantime. You are going to wait some time for a BB58 (which quite frankly is, in my opinion, one of the best divers made in recent times)... and you'll wait for the GMT too. Both maybe 6-9 months. BB41 and Pelagos especially can be picked up very easily, at a discount. You will either need to really like it and keep it or wait to sell it on as they aren't "hot" models but will sell. Privately at perhaps -35% RRP quite quickly. But to honest, if you like the titanium Pelagos its a stunning and very technical watch for the money. Its bracelet and clasp with active adjustment should be on way more expensive models. The LHD model is my fav and the blue is stunning too, makes a perfect holiday watch on the rubber strap too. |

I think you’ll luck out and find an Explorer II in a case. They do get them in and they do go in the case. My AD in NY has had two in the past two/three months in the case. GMT and Sub are less likely but it can’t hurt to ask.

Don't get into the thought process of flipping, this wont help you. Have you looked at other brands of watches?

I would go Polar Explorer II and check out the websites of some of our Trusted Sellers. This is not a hard find and you can get one at retail or slightly above for new. By the time you pay tax at an AD you are basically at the same place. And the watch will be to you by 1030 the next day. Why wait and waste your time. Go get your watch.

This is one I bought as a ‘beater’ and to tide me over while I waited for a Pepsi I was a bit surprised by how much I liked it.

Can't look in your wallet but 2-5K over is nothing in lifetime ownership.
I hate waiting so I would buy it today to have it delivered asap on my doorstep

I'd vote to wait - at least that's what I'm doing. If you have any family / friends who are clients at any ADs, might help to try to leverage that to see if it helps your list situation.

Grey is the only sane option. The prices are only going to go up while you wait and the shortage won’t end.
