Reference Guide to 5-digit models. Which one to buy?

I wrote this new article to my blog. Actually I wrote it back in 2012 but never had time to finish it.

These are just my opinions and views of the different 5-digits, not gospel. I've owned almost all of them and I wanted to share my views and photography. And by no means it's not inteded to be another 5-digit vs. 6-digit debate. The article just concentrates on my favorite models, nothing more.

I hope you enjoy the article. Let me know if you think something should be added.

Here's a link to the article. Enjoy!

Great read. Thanks for that. I was expecting to see more love for the 16710 than was given. Seems like you deter due to current pricing. And yes prices are crazy.

“If you’re going to buy only one Rolex and wear it for the rest of your life I would recommend the stainless steel 16610 Submariner.”

I slightly disagree because with the 16710 you can change inserts to change colors. Which can spice things up a bit when you get bored with one. Kind of like when my wife goes from straight hair to curly. It’s like I got a new wife! Lol.

But great read nonetheless. Thank you for sharing.

I think over time the 5 digits will be the most desirable of them all.

@2th Doc: Thanks man.

Oh yeah don't get me wrong I absolutely LOVE my 16710. It's a wonderful classic but for me it just doesn't feel quite as nice on the wrist as the Sub.

But then again Sub might be the best and most versatile watch in the world.

Five digits are definitely beautiful pieces. Wish I had 16618 or 16613 blue dial and pre ceramic bezel.

It's probably my all time favorite too. But that changes weekly between the SD and Sub.

I fully agree with your conclusion - the 16610 LN is "the one" and LV in a different way too!

Yeah I should have mentioned the LV there. Good point. I'll add a line or two.

i have 2 nice 6-digit models but will NEVER EVER part w/ my 5-digit ones. would only consider moving the 16610ln if a 16610lv was involved). Then I would need a LN insert :)

Thanks man.

Oh yeah... the Root Beer. That's a coooool model. But it's kinda rare and maybe not that quintessential, either.

Think about it... there are very few old two-tone 5-digit GMTs around compared to 16613 Sub. Hmm...

Very True.
I had far more difficult time finding my 16713 than other models. 16613s def seem more popular.
I'm not sure if the latter is because 1) Rolex made far more 16613s than 16713s, 2) many 16713 owners aren’t selling, etc... probably some sort of combo. I haven’t been price tracking 16613s but 16713s.

Full set 2000-2006 16713s were reselling for estimated $4100 in 2008, $7500 in 2015 and selling at $11,000+ now. Insane jump since 2015 for Root Beers while black / yellow 16713s are $8000-$9000 for a nice full set.

Yeah I always found it strange that there were so few two-tone 5-digit GMTs and so many Subs. Maybe it was the blue TT Sub which made the 16613 more "obvious" choice. That has always been very popular watch.

The other strange thing is that they never made a two-tone 5-digit Pepsi GMT. It always came with the black (or brown) bezel.

If I only have one , between 16610 and 16710 I would choose the GMT 2.
It ticks more boxes than the Sub. More versatile with many inserts and 2 bracelets, thinner and water resistant enough for any of us.

The GMT would be my choice.

You echoed my thoughts. They are essential the same watch exteriorly. Offer different bezel choices. I like the subtle splash of red on the 16710 and the unidirectional bezel with 120 clicks (easily done also on the 16610) which allowed the watch to be used as an egg timer to.

Not sure why Rolex changed it to 24 clicks w/ 116710 along with the post- Thanksgiving dinner lugs.
