Bought Son a Sub, Now He Wants an Apple Watch!
When my son graduated from high school I gifted him my Tag Heuer Aqua Racer (pic of the Tag attached). He had always admired it and I was ready to move to a Rolex. Win-win!
He has worn that watch daily, all through college and, now, through 2 years of law school. I decided that for graduation next May I’d get him a Rolex Submariner. After all, a crown for every achievement, right? Of course this decision to get him a Rolex was made before this “shortage” was a real thing. I figured I could always pick up a Sub when the time came. And then the “shortage” hit. About 6 months ago I stopped at my local AD to see if he by some miracle had a BLRO. He didn’t, but he did have a Sub and, in an unusually spontaneous moment for me, I bought it. I’ve been wearing it regularly and my son seems to admire it. My plan is to engrave it with his name and date and something like “Love Dad”. I was thinking that the fact that it’s coming off my wrist and onto his is something that he will really appreciate. So all is great, right? Not quite. I saw him this week and he casually mentioned he’d really like an Apple Watch! Damn! I can’t believe it. He’s not a gadget guy but he said he likes the fitness tracking, along with other features that the Apple offers. He’s still getting the Rolex in May but I’m a little less excited than I was. Stay tuned for a future thread of the gifting. |

Nothing stupid about an Apple Watch.

Are you serious? Saying an Apple Watch is stupid is ignorant. Disclaimer, I’ve own my share of watches and can attest that there is no other watch out there that has as many compilations as an Apple Watch. I think having a smart watch belongs in a rotation if you are a WIS. I can pay my groceries, turn on my lights, open my garage door, control the ambient temperature in my house - all on my wrist. I just serviced 4 mechanical watches this past summer and the amount I spent could probably get me the next 4 iterations of the Apple Watch. I think an Apple Watch has its place in a collection with the health benefits and its convenience factor. I like my Rolex’s as much as my Apple Watch but I won’t wear both of them at the same time. OP. I deal with attorneys on a daily basis and I think a Sub is a great watch for an Associate. Once he makes Partner, he can repay you with a PM for being a great father. John I have no doubt your son will be over the moon when you give him the Submariner. I know I would be if my father gave me a watch.

Bought Son a Sub, Now He Wants an Apple Watch!
Im sure there are Sub owners on TRF who also have an apple watch in their rotation. I am sure your son will cherish the Sub nonetheless.

I used to have a calculator watch. And one that played Pac-Man. He’ll grow out of it.

Not a big deal IMO. I'm sure he'd still love and appreciate the Sub more than the Apple Watch. But the Apple does have a lot of practical applications, and can be worn to the gym, and during other physical activity that wearing a 10k watch may not be ideal for. There's room in one's life for both, so don't let it diminish your excitement.

He isnt ready for a Sub yet .
Give him a brand new Sub when he finishes law school .He will be ready then . (You better start looking for the Sub now .... I wouldn't worry about possible changes at Basel in 2020 or thereafter. No sub goes out of fashion ) |

That’s the plan. He graduates in May and has already accepted an offer from a “Big Law” firm. He’s earned it and he’s ready.

I think sometimes we expect everyone to love watches as much as we do..perhaps hes just not as interested as you...it sound like hes going to earn his own money soon.....id let him buy a rolex if its what he really wants...better than you buying one and it sitting in his sock drawer whilst he enjoys his applewatch nonsense

I agree ... give him what he wants - the Apple Watch (and maybe some ear pods). He will love them. Later, when he graduates Law School and becomes an adult, he will appreciate the Sub more. Also, he may love it even more thinking it was your special watch that he saw you wearing. BTW, I love my Apple Watch for what it is ... and it does not take away from my 2 Rolexes, 2 Tag Heuers, and 2 Casio G-Shocks. Each has a role to fill. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I have a coworker that wears an Omega on one wrist and a ceramic Apple Watch on the other. I sometimes miss the features of wearing my Apple Watch daily, so I get it. Your son will definitely appreciate the Sub still.

A sub is fine at the gym and in other tasks. They are built to last and speak from experience.

I got a Rolex and an Apple Watch when I graduated from medical school I was 25 at the time. I’m 27 so I’m assuming I’m close in age to your son, since my graduation I’ve gotten 2 more Rolex watches. My Apple Watch is sitting in a drawer somewhere. I thought I would like the Apple Watch a lot more than I do. It’s nice to wear in the hospital when seeing patients since it is inappropriate to pull a phone out while with patients, but I always seem to reach for one of my other watches every morning.
You should give him the Rolex and an Apple Watch! See which he will wear more. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I wore nothing but an apple watch for a year when I got it. Then I put on the mechanical watches and I sold the apple watch and nothing but since.
I think the apple watch has it's uses but you just cant replace the human emotions stirred with a fancy mechanical piece. |
