no idea but when you find out let me know so i can report all the discounts happening too.
i would rather my watch have an inflated price than a devalued one or is the price fixed only in one direction? going below is fine but above isn't? its either a fixed price, or its not. It cant be to your advantage both ways as i suspect considerably more watches go out the door with a discount than ones that dont. If you want to talk about a real problem, i would start there.

If you get it at 20% off retail, the secondary market is at least another 20% hit or more when you move on. people dont like watches worth 1/2 of retail In say it all the time, but if Rolex was going to do anything it makes more sense to clamp down on discounts but no one complains about those AD's. This cycle of hot watches has had a positive effect on those other Rolex references that use to carry a hefty discount, those are quite a bit less these days

MSRP = Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price
I don't think there is any law/policy preventing them from selling over it. As someone said: you would never report getting a discount. Supply & Demand and all that. |

I concur with Mr Merseyside's suspicion.
It's probably a used watch. Though it seems to be easier to get in touch with the Almighty than it does to get a line to Rolex.

AD selling above MSRP
First, get out a pen and paper. You can’t do the next steps via email.
. . . Next write down all the details. Enclose paper copies of all your evidence. Make sure to add the name(s) of the AD personnel, their phone numbers, email addresses, age, and employee ID numbers. . . . Do not fold the papers... . . . Roll them all tightly in a ball no greater than 80mm... . . . Throw with maximum force into the closest trash bin. It accomplishes the same thing as paying the postage to Geneva only to have the Rolex complaint department do the same. Look, what’s the issue? Try buying a C8 or a Supra from a car dealer.... Hmmmm...selling their ‘can’t keep it in stock’ product for a premium. I’d be worried that Rolex would use this AD as a case study to roll out internal training across the other ADs to teach them how to do the same thing.

If you go to the Rolex website and click on the circled “i” next to the price you can read Rolex’s pricing policy.
Below is the policy: “Rolex pricing policies Rolex's suggested retail price before applicable taxes. Rolex reserves the right to change prices at any time without notice. Models availability All Rolex watches are assembled by hand with utmost care to ensure exceptional quality. It is natural that such high standards should restrict our production capacity. Rolex makes regular deliveries to the official distribution network. However, due to high demand, the availability of certain models may be limited. Official Rolex Retailers are at your service should you need any advice. Only they are authorized to sell new Rolex watches, and independently manage the allocation and sales to their customers.” I read the bolded part to say if you have a problem with an AD take it up with the AD. |

i always thought that Rolex's business model was specifically to avoid dealing with end customers. They are a wholesaler and seem to have no interest in customer facing anything

its not illegal to do this but i thought i heard Rolex USA had a policy of not allowing their ADs to do this for new watches. i may be wrong but might be worth looking into. do a search on this forum.

Some unexpected posts here.
The reason there is an msrp is to protect the consumer. Without it the seller could just throw out a price and hope. The msrp is on the product by way of a tag. Before the internet, and until a few years ago, a price list was available that accompanied the catalog. The website lists the price today. The goal is continuity of pricing that is fully disclosed to the buyer in advance, to protect the consumer from unscrupulous practices. Selling below msrp is not equivalent then, as the consumer is advantaged rather than compromised. |

Harley Davidson completely avoided most grey market "issues" back when they were hot and hard to come by in certain regions. Dealers simply added a line called "market adjustment" and that was what you had to pay. I live in less of a HD hotbed where we have an off season and never had to overpay...but many did.
I don't think it is illegal although it appears it may be against Rolex USA policy. |
