The all-new Land Rover Defender.

Love the classic Defender. What's your take on the new one?

Been waiting for this for years. A lot to process. Tempted to order but the usual fears of spending long afternoons staring at vintage snow shoes and drinking shit coffee in the service department have me second guessing.

Lol! Made me laugh Tom. First model year will be a disaster with issues. You may need to pack a lunch when bringing it in for service...your LC is bullet proof.

No way. I knew that they would tart it all up.
Loaded is in the 80’s. Hard pass. I’m glad I didn’t wait.

The 90 is awesome like the classic. Not sure the new one will be as tough as the old one though.

This will take some time to process and may need to see it in person. On first look, I really dislike like the exterior design and keeps me longing for the prior gen. Mercedes is able to balance luxury with a boxy old school design with the g wagon, not so much with new D90/110. Feels like a techy/hipster ride vs an off-road tool... I know most don’t off-road, but I do.

Looks like RR did to the Defender what Rolex did to the Submariner.

Probably a better vehicle overall but something was lost.

Like? Some will, some won't.

I am seriously trying to think of a bigger automotive snafu in recent years and I just cannot come up with anything.

Mercedes, for example, did a great job with the new G Wagon. They kept the iconic styling, but managed it update it in many ways. I wish LR would have done something similar, even if it meant a starting price that is 20-30k more.

I disagree, I think if anything it is the opposite. MB has turned the G wagon into a chariot for the rich and famous and refuses to offer one enthusiasts can take off road. For this reason likely less than 1/100 buyers ever venture off pavement. You need over 100k to step foot in one.

The defender can be had for 55k and with factory options such as steel wheels, rooftop tent, winch etc

Sure the styling is not a direct descendant but what they are offering seems far better than what I was expecting, which is the exact same thing with a starting price around 80k.

Anyone here own a discovery 5? I am wondering if this factory in Slovakia makes crap or not so bad lol

Yea, but the G has been getting more and more lux over the past 15+ years. It wasn’t an all of a sudden kind of thing. And Benz does offer a stripped down version, the G Professional. Of course we don’t get it here in the states because we never get the cool cars and honestly, there’s probably no real market for it here.

The styling of the Defender is just so off putting for me, but that’s a very subjective thing so YMMV. I do like the steel wheels though lol.

I get it. Many prefer the '4 digit LR', some like me love the 5 digit, but the 6 digit is highly controversial lol. It's not a tool anymore just some jewelry on four wheels..

while I kind of like the supra.

I think a lot of people might agree that the supra is as big, if not bigger.

The Aztek. I saw one on eBay for $460 dollars.

The new design abandons the rich legacy of the original. It looks like a Scion or Kia Soul but likely without their reliability. MB did the 2019 G Wagon exceptionally well as they created the first meaningful update in 30 years while remaining true to its heritage. Anyone remember the Mustang II, an abysmal iteration of the legacy Stang?

I wanted not to hate it but it's not tall, utilitarian and with straight axles. Those are the things I liked most about the previous generations. Do they even know/care why people liked the old ones?
Sigh, I'm sure this will be a big hit at the mall.
