Would you buy new or used Explorer II

Hi Guys!

What is your opinion on the Explorer II?

Do you recommend the Explorer II and would you pay full MSRP for the watch at AD or would you go gray? Are there waiting list on the model at ADs?

I think the big orange Gmt hand on the current modern explorer 2 is nice and only can be found on vintage 1655 explorer 2. Go for it if you can find one.

If you want a 216570 it can be had new with a little persistence from an AD. Also could go grey. A nice 16570 runs a little cheaper but then you will need to go pre-owned. 16550 is niche and can be expensive (cream dial especially). 1655 is the true vintage model and requires more expertise to find the version that suits you at a fair price.

With regards to the newer models I think the crux of the issue is how big do you like a watch to be and how maxi do you like a dial to be?

First rule of almost anything... The answer is always NO unless you ask.

Just ask and get your new watch.

It is very unlikely that they will negotiate on price, but you can try. If you have a good relationship with them they may humor you, but I seriously doubt it. These days it's almost impossible to negotiate on SS Rolex, unless you are special or buying more than one watch.

I wouldn't use the word realistic, I'd use the word likely - and it isn't likely. SS Rolex are not hard to sell, so they have no reason to offer discounts. They aren't desperate to sell these things.

If price is such a concern for you you should look at buying used, because you can probably get more than 10% off on the secondary market, with this particular model.

This watch is one that can be had on the secondary market for a discount because pre owned models are plentiful. I would buy pre owned on this one and save some money. Plenty out there still under factory warranty. Otherwise, I doubt the wait time is too long and you can be the original owner and put your name on the card.

Maybe 3-5% off bottom line for cash vs. credit card.

But to answer the first question, I would suggest pre-owned.

Maybe look for “A” serial number Expl.II’s in average shape. They are the oldest 5-digits you’ll find with a Luminova dial and lug holes.

Then get an RSC overhaul.

Thanks. I like the old model but the newest model sings most to me so i will go for that.

How much do the preowned newest model typically sell for? 7k?

Try find one at AD otherwise you pay slight premium nowadays.. I payed in june 2018 6500 for a brand new stickered one.. But these days are gone.

I love mine. It was my first Rolex and the novelty has not worn off.

It's coming up on two years since I bought mine from my local AD. They had it in stock and gave me a discount which made it about the same price as a used one with visible marks from Watchfinder. So it was a no brainer.

I expect that getting a discount today will be impossible. But you should always ask, because you'll never know until you ask, and if you don't ask you don't get.

I love the retro look coupled with a distinctly non retro 42mm case. The big hands and lumes are very easy to read and strikingly beautiful when they glow blue against the white dial.

I have a couple of non Rolex GMT watches which can, depending on the light intensity and how it falls, be difficult to read. They can be misread, and, the GMT hand can be hard to see. The Polar never fails to be easy to read, including in pitch darkness after a night's sleep. It's a good mixture of style and functionality.

They're not in as high demand as other SS models, so you can usually get them for lower than MSRP on the secondary market - that's probably the route I would go if I was going to buy one. In fact I was close to buying one at one point, a guy had just received one as a gift but he didn't want it and was offering it locally for 7K cash (maybe even less, that was the advertised price). I was very close to doing it but literally my AD called me that day and had a Batman to offer me, so I did that instead.

You can't really go wrong here it's just a question of do you want to save some money buying used or not. It's never bad to buy a Rolex at an AD.

Waitlist I think it depends on your area but I have definitely seen them in the display at my local AD's. They aren't as hard to find as other models are.

Keep in mind that buying from AD gives you 2 benefits. First, you get your own name on the warranty card, and second, you build history with the AD. After buying exp ii you may be “eligible” for, say, a SubC

It is a beautiful watch, and with GMT functionality it is also very useful. But always buy the watch that you feel connected to, not something that others recommend.

As far as pricing goes, a few months ago (still at the height of SS shortages) I saw one of these at my nearby AD that I could buy at MSRP+tax, but I wasn't interested. Not sure if these are also now a shortage model or not, if things have gotten worse. If the grey pricing is basically MSRP+tax plus a few extra bucks, don't wait for AD and just go with grey market to get the watch sooner and enjoy.

Been contemplating getting one of these myself. For the price and with its functionality, look and desirability, I think it’s one of the best value Rolex sports watches out there.

After seeing both in the wild, personally the black dial appeals more to me. That orange GMT hand just pops on the black.

Black n white both cool watches
White add some specialty but black would be perfect as only watch .. I was in a AD last weekend and i got a compliment on it as in hey this one you don't see so much. Cool watch better than anyone who wants the same Rolex he said gnaga..

I personally like the 216570 design, and for a 42mm, it wears comfortably, equal to my Moonwatch Pro and better than my Black Bay 41 (top heavy). Short waiting time too!

I picked up a 216570 (black dial) pretty soon upon release back in the days of course when you could still walk in to an AD and walk out again with one. I really liked the way it looked and sat on my wrist, though I could not get used to the case width ......it felt wider than my Speedmaster PRO though in reality there is probably not much difference. Ended up moving it on though maybe shoudl have given it a bit more time. Anyway, would still recommend it or indeed the 16570, maybe polar for me next time out!

Prices are about the same I think give or take, just buy a minty one wherever you can. The Polar dial is a beauty and will be the one in your collection that will stand out in the sea of black.
