One watch guy

Shopping for my second Rolex, maybe an Explorer 1 but I have a problem. Can’t imagine not wearing my Sub date. Perhaps I’m a one watch guy.

Ha! Same here. For the longest time, I thought the one watch was going to be a SD. I've had it for a couple years now, and, while I love it, the practicality and functionality of a GMT really seems to call to me. If I can find it at MSRP, I may need to find something nice for my wife very quickly....

If you don't love the Explorer then pass, otherwise you will want to sell it a year later at a loss. You may just be getting caught up in the hype.

I'm the same. I can't imagine liking anything more than my sub... Sometimes I have DD fantasies though. I'd miss the timing bezel though; I use that all the time. I might pick up a Seiko 5 for a beater though, or maybe something with Tritium lume if I end up with any more assignments in sketchy places.

One watch guys are a breed I respect but will never understand. If you can do with out great. Otherwise take the red pill, buy the Explorer and before long you will be posting incomings quarterly.

For me, it's just easier. I wake up, slap my watch on, and go.

There's also the romantic in me that wants for my kids what I was given. When I received my undergrad degree, my uncle gifted me my grandpa's watch. It was the watch he used to time lectures and debate sessions. He watched for the time to head home for the night, or when to pick up his kids. It was the watch that helped him hold a schedule together, that ticked through his life. It spans years upon years of family photos. It was his watch, and now it's a piece of family history.

I'd love to have that for my kids.

I for sure respect your standpoint. I wore a 16610 as my one and only for 10 years. Never left my wrist. Then I bought another while it was being serviced and it was all down hill from there. I think there will always be one or two I hold above the rest from a “romantic” standpoint but I also enjoy the way the research, hunt and inevitable purchase provides a frivolous respite from some of the stressors that come along with what sometimes feels like crushing responsibility.

There is that....which is why I've had 4 "one watches" now. Starting with the IWC, then the two Panerai, and now the SD.

In addition to the respite, there's some allowance for peer pressure.......watch companies keep putting out some really cool pieces, and you guys in the forums keep making them look so damn cool.

These days, after a bit of a struggle, I’m down to just one mechanical watch , a DD40. It;s fine, although I also have a couple of quartz models, but they don’t count.

I've purged. I think the most I had at one time were twelve, whittled down to four, then three, two.......and now one. If you would have told me four years ago that I'd be a one watch guy, I would laughed in your face. I don't think I'll ever have more than one luxury watch again, unless I'm given one as a gift.

I’ve got three (milgauss, explorer and GMT) I wear each one for a week and have come to love the Friday night transition. I used to change daily but I like the time with one watch and after a two week break it’s great to get reacquainted.

Sad I know but hoping fellow watch guys/gals understand.

I’m not as scheduled but I get it. I switch every few days. Lately, I’ve called on the JLC several times this week, after a several month hiatus.

I respect the guys that only wear one watch. There’s something about wearing that watch through all of your life’s joys and trials, and when you pass on that watch remains for your kids or someone in your family (hopefully) to own a piece of you and a representation of your life.

As for me though, I don’t have kids and once I’m dead what do I care? So I am most definitely not in the one watch club. Good luck in your decision OP. A warning though... put 2 rolexes together and they tend to multiply like bunnies. Before you know it, you’ll have 3, then 4...

I like the idea of having one watch. Keeps life simple and the sentimental value grows. Although not my favourite, from a practical standpoint I think a Sub date would be my choice if I had to do this.

But there are too many watches that I like to the extent that I want to own them, and I enjoy the research, hunt, the ownership and tinkering - even selling can be quite fun. Plus, I hope to be fortunate enough to have more than one child, and I know from my own sibling rivalry that giving one something and another nothing is enough to start world wars.

So I've decided to build a collection of a few staple pieces which will be keepers, and save a few slots for messing around.
