I may have renewed my father's interest

Just wanted to share this quick story that I think you folks will appreciate.

My father owns a TT DJ from the late 80's (classic flluted jubilee w/ champagne dial). He used to wear it every day when I was growing up. I have many a fond memory associated with this watch - from family vacations to simply lazing about the house, watching movies together etc. - it's alway been there.

Over the past 10 years or so he has completely stopped wearing it, opting to throw on an L.L. Bean quartz watch instead. The reason being that he was worried about it getting damaged now that it's quite old, or stolen now that he works in Trenton (not the safest of cities), and it's not insured.

I'm fairly new to the hobby (it's only been about 4 years), but will talk watches with anyone with even a remote interest. I've enjoyed sharing my watch collecting stories with my father, and it appears he has enjoyed them too. I was on the phone with him this past weekend (we live on opposite coasts), and the subject of Rolex came up again. At this point he mentions to me that he's decided to get his DJ insured, so that he can start wearing it again! I was overjoyed to hear this. We have a trip coming up in November, and I'm really looking forward to us both wearing our two generations of TT Rolex, and bonding over our love of these timepieces for the first time.

It feels great knowing that I may have played a role in getting him excited about wearing his Rolex again. Now I'd like to open this discussion up to you all. Please share any stories or anecdotes you have about your father/family member, and your shared love of Rolex (or just watches in general).

And thanks for reading!

Awesome story, Mike. My dad and I also share a love of watches, Rolex in particular. The watches he wore during my childhood we’re ultimately responsible for my interest and passion for Rolex. It’s something I’ll always remember about my dad and hope years from now my son will have the same feelings. After all, my watches will be his one day. I already have his college graduation present and wedding present all ready to go, but since he’s only five I’ll just keep wearing them for him! :)

If you have a chance, would love to see a pic of your and your dad’s watches added to the thread!

Thanks! I know what you mean. My whole passion for watches started with my dad's DJ. I knew that watch before I even know what a Rolex really was...heck, before I even knew what a mechanical watch was. And it will always be THE quintessential Rolex to me.

I'll definitely try to take a pic or two of our watches together on our vacation. My dad is very old school (doesn't even carry a cell phone), so it should be quite interesting when I try to explain the concept of a wrist shot selfie

PS - sounds like your son has a lot to look forward to

My Rolex passion starts in the 80's because I fell in love with the DJ TT champagne dial of my dad, his watch was stolen and now he wear a German UTS 3000m watch, he send me just today this picture. He love mechanical wristwatches too:

Great story. As a kid who’s dad had no interest in this stuff, I’m jealous. Great work!
