Rolex 126660 deepsea BLACK

Is this dial matte? Is it similar to the SD43 dial? Thanks in advance!

I’ve been comparing these two watches a lot lately and specifically these two characteristics; the matte finish and also the color of dial. So to me the DSSD 126660 is more matte and less black than sd43. Sd43 has some gloss to it comparatively and just seems jet black whereas DSSD has hint of grey in it.

The light has to hit the SD43 just right to see the full matte brilliance and pull out the grey tone

Otherwise it can look a bit glossy

A follow up question on the Deep Sea (black) if I may. It seems the DSSD black doesnt carrry the high premium as the DSSD JC edition or the SD43. Am i correct in my initial observations?

Yes, the premium on the black DSSD is comparatively lower. It's definitely a sleeper that holds its own against D-Blue version.

Having owned my SD43 for over 2 years I can confirm there is no gloss to the dial.

No.....it wasn't
The dial is matte. The big beautiful domed sapphire throws of a lot of reflection and can make it appear to shine, but it's coming from the crystal.

The SD43 is a sort of satin finish. It really needs bright sunlight to hit it for the true matte nature to show, like the pic above. Other times, it almost has a Sub look to it.

I believe the Deepsea is more matte.

SD43 has a matte dial. Who knew! In most photos it looks glossy. How exciting, and I have one incoming shortly. Even more excited now.

There is a significant optical difference between the two watches due to the thickness and curvature of the Crystal on the DSSD.
I expect one can't really tell for sure until the dials are out of the watches and viewed side by side.

Remember, there was quite a bit of debate about the dials on the later ceramic SD4K's having more of a glossy appearance as opposed to a grayish browny matte finish they originally came out with.
I think the consensus was that it was wholly dependent on the lighting conditions in that case, and the dials hadn't really changed

Satin finish almost all the time but when sunlight hits directly is a beautiful matte color. The DSSD is a nice matte. SD43 is Glossy/Matte, a treasure from the Rolex alchemists laboratory for the 50th anniversary of the SeaDweller!

Dirt I think you have a great point about the curvature and thickness of the crystal on DSSD. It definitely plays with the look of the dial. Both of these watches are awesome in their own unique way.

Same matte dial on all three Sea-Dwellers. They have never had a glossy dial although it can look deep dark in some lighting and with crystal reflections, look glossy.
The last Sea-Dweller to have a glossy dial was the SD 16600.
The ceramic boys, SD4K, SD43 and the Sea-Dweller Deepsea 116660 and 126660 have always been matte dial, the same matte dial, although Rolex calls it satin finish.

I have to disagree, I've had both in my hands and the DSSD is matte all the time, the SD43 is identical to the SubC (like glossy) unless give it direct light, then is matte. It is not the same painting.

You can disagree if you want, but I've owned it on two different occasions for over four years. They have the same dial. The behavior you see is exhibited by all ceramic era Sea-Dwellers.
The dial can look jet black, then hit it with sun light and you see how matte it is, the Explorer 1 has a similar if not the same dial.
