16710 v 16610

I have 4 watches: Daytona Ceramic (white), Sub 16610, GMT Rootbeer (90s) and Milgauss Z blue. All have Oyster.

I would like to buy an older GMT on a jubilee. Question I have is, will I still wear my sub, given that I could just buy a black insert for the GMT?

Does anyone have both, and wear both? And does anyone advise against the GMT or recommend a different watch altogether?

Not an exact comparison, but I have a SubC, a 5 digit GMT, and a 6 digit GMT, they all get worn equally as I love how unique each is. If your financial situation requires you to trade, then another story, otherwise, I wouldn’t give up your only Sub!

I am the opposite. I’d give up the sub for the versatility of the gmt every day of the week.

Yes you’ll still wear your sub. It’ll be on Oyster, wears a bit higher and heavier, one less hand and totally different bezel.

I wouldn’t be without a 16710 or a 16610/14060.

Picking just one would be a challenge.. 16710 probably due to its unique versatility.

I certainly cant advise against adding a 16710. I just added one and it's an instant favorite for me although my Subs, 4 and 5 digit are sans date. I say you cant go wrong.

With that tiny crown, a pain to set the time and no quickset date I think you'll use your Sub a lot.

Well, get a 16700 instead. It has the quickset, and looks very similar to the 16710. I actually prefer the 16700 for that reason, and also the fact that it's the last GMT Rolex made (as opposed to GMT II).

That's a good idea. I realized I can't be happy with a watch without quickset date.

16710 is fairly quick. You just advance the quickest hour hand. It’s about two turns per day. It’d not like you have to wind the minutes around.

Although winding the opposite direction to quickset the date without having to move the hours would be a welcome addition.

Have you thought about an even older GMT? I recently bought this 1675 nipple dial (1973) and absolutely LOVE it. There is no comparison to my modern GMTs (126710BLRO, 116710BLNR, 126710BLNR and 116713LN). The nipple dial is rather special in my view.

GeoffS - that 1675 is beautiful. I have been looking at older GMTs, but finding one in original condition is somewhat difficult. The variations and understanding which dial belong with which year requires a lot of knowledge. I have seen a couple and they are amazing, but ultimately, I can't wear a watch that may not be water resistant. I have a toddler and may end up submerging my hand in the bath etc without thinking. The thought of ruining a 12k plus watch so easily is a frightening concept. I will go for a 16700 or 16710...

Now, do I keep my 16610 if I get the GMT, or upgrade to a 5513?

That's very true regarding the 1675. So many have service dials, hands, bezels, bracelets and even service cases. Not much left other than the movement, and that's undoubtedly been fiddled with over the years too. Original 1675s are out there but expensive. I went the other direction and decided not to overly worry about true originality as I didn't want to pay through the nose to get it. This 1675 cost me only £7k and it had just come back from a Rolex service so had a 2 year warranty. Definitely wouldn't put it anywhere near water mind you!

You'd still wear the sub. The GMT is a completely different watch. I have a ceramic sub and 2 5 digit gmts and used to have a 5 digit sub and would rotate all of them.

I like my 16710 like having six warches in one .. 3 inserts and 2 different bracelets.

If I were to choose one it would probably be the 16710 or 16700, but after owning both 16610 and 16710 it’s a close tie. That’s why I went with an LV Anniversary Sub just to spice it up with some color and the Maxi dial is an added bonus. Plus the green goes well sitting next to a black/red bezel watch in the valet tray.

I own GMT 16700 (1989) and until recently owned a Sub 16610 (2009).

I have a 7.1/4" wrist and I prefer how the GMT wears. Perhaps just the shape of my wrist, we are all a bit different. Bought a new jubilee for my GMT and that watch gets most wrist time. Sold the Sub as was getting minimal wrist time. Have no Subs now.

Whilst the 16700 looks great with a black bezel, I cannot bring myself to switch from the pepsi!

Tough call here. I have a 16610 and really like the 5 digit gmt. However I make my watch decisions based on function. I love the look of the gmt, but i don’t travel internationally often at all, and I have a need to measure elapsed time, so use the bezel several times a day for my job. Why don’t you pick up the gmt, as you clearly like it and see how it goes. I mean if after 6 months, the 16610 is not getting much wrist time. You can always make a move.

Both the Sub and GMT are great watches in pretty much any guise. cannot go wrong with either. If I ever had to come down to just one though (hopefully not), it would probably be either 16700 or 16710 - tough choice!

I would just get a 2-tone jubilee for your root beer GMT and be done with it. Why get rid of the sub and have 2 GMTs?
