1st Time Day-Date Buyer

I'm a rapidly aging athlete...life is slowing down...I'm over 50 now...hair turned white and spend a lot more time in formal attire. My life is boring now.

I like bold watches. My daily driver is a D-Blue. I don't like watches with diamonds or mess all over it. Don't like the baller look. I like a clean, traditional watch. But one that catches the eye. Something flashy. It takes the attention off my wrinkled face and wacky hair.

Kinda torn between a RG DD40 with Chocolate Dial or the more traditional YG 40MM with the white dial. Which one has a better wrist presence in your opinions? I don't want my DD to be "gaudy" but it does need to have a little pop to it.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Sorry cant help you. I love both the RG and YG so jut bought 1 of each :)

In all honesty though and I've been saying it for ages now the first DD should be YG even though I did it the other way around. LOL

As always, go with what you like and what makes you smile when you look at your wrist.

Now, in my subjective opinion I would say based on what you wrote with "don't need a baller look, clean and traditional but catches the eye" I would push you to the YG. I am a huge fan of rose gold, I like it and it looks great with my skin tone. However, yellow gold has endured the test of time. Rose gold can still be considered a fad; lots of women's jewelry was in rose gold a couple of years ago, and now it is considered an “old trend” and they are moving back to yellow gold.

Thus, a yellow gold Day Date. Now, for the dial I think the white dial definitely pops and gives it a timeless look, however, I think I am more of a fan of the silver motif with batons instead of numerals. I think it gives it a symmetrical presence and adds a little bit of depth along with the motif. But, if you like the white I would go for that.

Let us know what you pick, and post some pics when you do.

RG w/choc for me, please.

The 36 RG w/ choc used to be offered w/ dia. and ruby markers. It is my dream watch. You might consider a smaller watch with diamond markers. On my DJ, this is a very traditional look with "presence" that punches above its weight.

Sounds like you might like a 18078 campaign dial stick markers ! It pops but not gaudy.

I second the YG with silver motif (and not just cuz I have one). I selected it for similar reasoning to you: I wanted a traditional DD but with some flash. The YG is definitely noticeable and screams Daydate, and the motif dial has a lot going on without standing out TOO much.

Something else to consider, maybe a white gold with the blue or green dial? The WG is understated, but the color of those dials pop.

Now if you REALLY want flashy classic, then go YG with the champagne dial. There’s no missing that one.

I think all of the DD’s are fairly understated. If you want pop, perhaps go with the platinum ice blue? People would certainly notice the wow factor with that one.

If you’re keeping it in gold - I would go YG with white dial.

For the DD I would go YG over RG unless your skin tone works with the RG. My does not. I would leave both behind though and go WG or Platinum if you want to spend a little extra. I like the WG with the Green or Blue dial and the Platinum with any of the ice blue dials. More modern in my opinion. If you are going to go YG why not look at a Submariner as it has the glidelock clasp and wears well. It is hard to go wrong with a PM Rolex, it really falls into what you like. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

To be honest, I think a YG sub fits your criteria better than a DD, but, hey...get what makes you happy.

Also, as long as we're being honest, I've never had much luck diverting people's attention away from my wrinkled face with a nice watch. Maybe you will do better.

I like the WG DD40, personally, if you go that route. I'll just go ahead and post both for you.

Also, as William said, consider the fitment of the bracelet. Gold is heavy, and a sub, with the glide lock, has an advantage there. The DD's fit, without micro adjustment, is going to be pretty much left up to chance, unless you spring for specially sized links.

Ha! Good call. I have a bunch of subs and GMTs already. Need something else. But overall a great suggestion! Nice pics.

Both are great but the RG is more unusual and will likely catch more eyes, imho!!!

YG will certainly catch the eye and pop more than RG, as RG is a bit "warmer" and softer.

Also, if you like bold go with a black dial. That's about as bold as you can go with a DD.

I don't know if this will help, but I labored between the DD40 and theDAYTONA.

Watchwatcher brought up the fact about the Weight of the PM and the Ability to Adjust on the fly. A major concern for some. I have heard that the DD is tight in the summer and loose in the winter, and for me I don't like heavy watches flopping around. The DD wears flatter so it doesn't move as much and may wear perfectly fine for you.

Another issues for contemplation is how formal the DD is and how it will affect your wearability. True, some will say it can go with any attire or any occasion, but the DD is more formal than a sub for example. you will have to determine formalness...

These are just some of the reasons I went with the DAYTONA instead of the DD, but If the DD gets an adjustment like the Easy-Link or similar, I'd be all-in!

I went with the Daytona, due to its sportiness, comfort, and adjustability. But!, having said all that I may trade for the DD40...

Just a little to think about. Good luck on your choice. Here is a >Video< to help if your even considering the DAYTONA

I think between your two choices, the yellow gold white dial fits best. It’s has more versatility than the RG variant and in my personal opinion, the RG has a more youthful look to it. Like other posters were saying, check out the white gold day date. It’s subtle but still pops.
