Another newbie debating on which rolex to get...

Hello, i've been debating for a while on which rolex to get as my first rolex.

I have narrowed the choices down to the following:

Rolex YachtMaster I Platinum - 16622
Rolex Submariner Date - 16610
Rolex Sea Dweller - 116660

out of those... i would go YM (maybe cause i already have a GMTIIc, and i would love the silver bezel as a way to mix it up)...

im one of the only people on here taht is sort of "over" the subdate... just too common for me i guess, and too simple

but SD is a DAMN close 2nd...

I would pick the SD or sub date. Out of those two, you need to try them on, they both have very different feels to them on the wrist.

Thats really up to you. I have the YM and the SUB and I wear the SUB way more than the YM. Infact I have been thinking of selling the YM.

I wouldn't get either of those because I don't like the sporty "tool" models. But if I had to pick, I'd go with the YM with all YG or RG. If you had the YM II as a choice, I'd do that one first because I like the count-down timer.

now that I see most people have voted for the Sub date over the other two watches. I was wondering if anyone know what the sub date's MSRP in canada is? I live in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. And if anyone live in that neighborhood, is there a particular AD that you would recommend (and maybe with good discounts too)?

They look great and a Sub would be a brilliant first rolex.

I keep toying on whether to get an LV or a TT Blue, but I'm holding fire for a while yet.

- MSRP on the Sub without the Date function is $5,420.00.

- MSRP on the fullsize-YMI is $10,500.00

- MSRP on the Deepsea SeaDweller is $9,950.00.

In terms of discount, you should be able to get 25% on everything but the Deepsea.

Deepsea, I've heard discounts in Canada range from 3%-11% being the highest.

I can attest that if you buy the Deepsea, you'll probably never need/want another Rolex ever again. It's the biggest, strongest, heaviest watch with all the newest gadgets Rolex has to offer which will slowly be introduced into all their models in their line-up. All the other models are small and light.

I've owned the old SD4000. I sold that to get the Deepsea. I like big, heavy, and over-engineered stuff.

I'm biased, what can I say. I own one!

PS - Rolex Canada hasn't had a price increase since May 2006. Rumour has it that prices will increase 5-10% next month on all new AD models.

Msrp in U.S. $9250 less 20% = $7400 converted at $1.2852 is $9500 Canadian. Then if you declare it, taxes will be 13% here in Ontario.

Net price of $10,735. I paid 10K taxes in, and no worry crossing into the States. The country code is #700, meaning it landed and was purchased in Canada.

If you wait long enough Rolex AD's in Canada will someday offer a discount, I got 11% off on mine, but i've bought several watches from this AD.

If you have a cool wrist like my uncle JJ ,then go for the yactmaster , if not then choose any of the two . By the way submariner is like a uniform ! Try something different among the Rolex line . My personal opinion , I might be wrong .

I personally would go with the GMT 116710LN but being that is not on your list I think that my next Rolex would be a YM there is just something about the red second hand that sets it off. Avery distinct watch. There are far too many watch manufactures that copied the Submariner and therefore no one that does not have the Watch Eye really notices a Sub. Which may be a good thing if you do not want to be noticed.

Besides those reasons look at your poll everyone is saying a Sub. What does that tell you everyone and their mom has a Sub. Be different get a YM. A little flashy but one Bad A$$ timepiece.

And that is this mans two pennies…

The YM is a strong watch. Durability of it's cosmetic appearance is another question.

One of the problems with the YM is the bracelet is very prone to scratches as the center-links are polished.

The YM's bezel is made of Platinum and has a sort of mat/grainy look and texture to it (I don't know what this is called). In anycase, there's been some mention made on TRF that if there are any deep scratches on the surface of this bezel, it could be difficult and costly to fix/buff this out.

Although the YM is a "tool" watch, I'd consider it to be more of the dress style like the TT Subs and such.

Had Rolex not come out with the Deepsea, I was seriously considering upgrading to the YM1, so it is a great looking watch.

PS, someone mentioned that the cost to replace the platinum bezel would run somewhere in the $3000 range!
