How tough is a datejust?

I'm asking specifically about a stainless, fluted on an oyster bracelet. I know it's 100m water proof and is a Rolex and all the toughness that comes with that, but is it really meant to be worn outside of the office?

Some background from where I'm coming from. I really like the 36mm Explorer. I like that it is dressy enough to wear to work, tough and sporty enough to wear while doing yard work, hunting, whatever you want, and you'll never have to worry about it in any setting and is under the radar. I'm getting married next year and my wife to be wants to gift me a watch and the 36mm Explorer being discontinued is what turned my attention to the datejust since we could get a brand new one. I want to do everything in the watch but I worry about being too active in the datejust. I always felt like they were meant for the office. I'm also curious about how the polished center links on the oyster bracelet hold up. I now it is tough, but was it really meant for active wear?

I'm currently in the process of hunting down a 39mm 214270 Explorer but have a feeling it's going to be too big for my taste.

Thanks!

Super tough... even more so on jubilee from an aesthetic wear and tear standpoint

This may sound funny, but the DJ fluted on jubilee may be the best beater watch on the market. As tough as a sub and the fluted bezel and jubilee hide scratches.

This is my exact thought right after reading the title of the thread.

Smooth bezel and polished center links are scratch magnets compared to the the configuration you mentioned.

Could be your only watch. I know many serious divers that never take theirs off for any diving duties. It’s a oyster case. Nuff said.

Don't prejudge the DJ

As previously stated - there is nothing delicate about the DJ. Worn by millions of non watch geeks as their one and only watch for years on end is testament to their durability. The professional models get most of the limelight from collectors, but don't overlook the DJ as a daily wearer and arguably the most versatile Rolex out there.

My son is a chef and he wears it daily in the kitchen which is not a friendly place for a watch. I remember once I saw a Rolex advertisement with a picture of their facilities maintenance person doing yard work wearing a Datejust. So I think it’s tough enough for almost any situation unless you’re one of those running to mama crying because there is a hairline scratch on their watch.

Wear mine all the time , the 36mm in my avatar- great watch and it’s the right size and weight. Also the hidden clasp doesn’t stick out like the oyster clasp so I notice overall less scratches in that area.

I wore mine (TT jubilee) for damn near 30 years and it still looks pretty good! I didn't baby it either. The bracelet is stretched out but the case and fluted bezel have no major dings. The minor scratches add character!

This is true.

Datejust or GMT or SUB or DAYTONA

Don’t drop any watch on the floor!

I’ve worn my stainless date diving at depths up to 90 ft for the past 40 years and I’ve never
had any issues.

All Rolex Oysters watches are tough enough for almost any task, but there are some that I would choose over others for certain activities.

It could be done, but I wouldn't choose to climb Everest with a PM DD, but that's just me.

I would use my Explorer 114270 or my 116200 63600, although I guess that there would be better instruments to use in the 21st Century.

Especially, ceramic tile.

I dropped my DJ from about 5' onto concrete and only put a few dents in the case in an area that is not visible when wearing it.

I was really lucky, though.

lol, here's my 51 year old 1603 still worn daily and you can drop it on a tile floor without breaking the acrylic crystal. :)

Toughest Rolex is a DJ36 with Super-Jubilee and diamond bezel ..it does not show scratches ...and the sporty clan thought they were so tough !

I’ve only owned mine for a little over a year...

But; here is a pic after a hike, and a pic after some yard work.

I wear it for hiking, swimming, yard work, working on the car (if task isn’t too crazy), washing the dishes, work... I’ve taken it to the driving range....

Basically, it’s my daily and joins me in whatever i do

Plus it’s more comfortable than a Rolex bluesy IMHO
