So the other day at work I found a ladies diamond face oyster date just in gold took it to a local jewelry to make sure it’s real and the ref number is 179173 .... now how to proceed ?

If you hand it into an AD or Rolex it should find its way back to its rightful owner . Some people including myself work hard to afford these so I would hand one back into the AD or direct to Rolex if i found one.

That’s a 6-digit Rolex, meaning it’s pretty new, and expensive. I’m sure the owner will be back asking for it.

Is there a place I can check to see if it was reported as I have the numbers off the watch ? I’m not going to just randomly turn it in so some cop gets a free watch ....

That's an interesting perspective.

You take it to a station, fill out the paperwork for a found item, then, after a time period, if the owner is not found or turns up, they give it back to you.

In law, the assumption is that if you lose a valuable object, you will be actively seeking it. If you are not seeking it, it is abandoned, and the finder then has the legal right to assume ownership.

In the future, your honest attempt to find the owner releases you from any liability if it turns up that the owner was looking, just in different areas.

That makes sense ... I’m all over for work delivery driver of sorts I found it under some leaves against a curb it was in a commercial not residential district I thought it would be registered and contacted Rolex but there unless unless u want to buy a new watch that’s why I’m asking the questions.... I took to to a helper to see if it was real and what the value was I have little faith in

This is slightly beside the point but why would you assume the police officer you would hand the watch in to would be corrupt? You’re not from a third world country. Of course, bent coppers exist, just like there are crooked people in every walk of life, but the assumption is odd.

Regardless, if you hand the watch in to the cops, you’ve done the right thing and your conduct would be beyond reproach (if we ignore the time wasted to log on and ask the question). What happens to the watch afterwards is out of your control and not your concern.

A cynic would read the bit in bold and wonder...

What? Generally, if lost or stolen property is not claimed within a certain time period, then the finder gets to keep the item. Insulting the police and making unfounded assumptions about them is inappropriate, particularly in this circumstance.

Exactly! You can’t take property and then claim the rightful owner never showed up, so the property must be yours.

To all TRF, think about this if you were the rightful owner: so you lose your watch, and then you come to find out that the person who found it, took it to a jeweler to do who knows what to it! In other words, your Hulk, your Daytona, whatever just got opened up and inspected by a stranger!

OP, really, you’re up to no good, solely based on that! Give it back!

I’m a cop (i.e. “some cop”) and have been for 20 years. I pay for my own watches. So do the others I know in this line of work who are also watch people.

The police departments I know of have specific policies/procedures for found and abandoned property where such things are documented and tracked. People turn things in to law enforcement agencies all the time to include jewelry, purses, wallets, etc. Where I am, if after 6 months and documented attempts to find the owner are unsuccessful, it is reviewed by a command officer and it is given back to the person who found it as it is then deemed abandoned. So, if you found it on the street while working, turning it in to law enforcement makes sense.

If you found at at the office in which you work or in the parking lot I don’t imagine it will be tough to find the person looking for it. As mentioned, a generic posting on the bulletin board requiring a description should reveal the owner pretty quickly.

Post a note where you found it and ask for complete description of the watch from anyone who claims it, and / or turn it over to the police.

No automatic finders keepers laws in Canada. You could be charged with theft if the owner declares it stolen, usually is the case when trying to collect insurance. Take it to the local Police and wait for the legal period of time in your Province to expire , if not claimed then you can ask it to be returned to you.

Depending on where you work, I’d leave it to corporate security or HR to figure it out. Then spread the word (non-specifically) that you’d found a watch and what you’d done with it. Someone will be looking for it.

My guess is that he works at a hotel or something of that nature. Maybe a casino and was cleaning up and found it. If this story holds any water that is.
