Fun 1970's car Poll

If someone were to present a sports car from the 1970's for you to own and drive, but never sell, which one would you choose (and why)?

I suppose I should have put in the Mercedes-Benz 450SL and Porsche 928, since I chose the Jaguar XJS, as the Jag really isn't a sports car per-se.

I keep thinking of more:

BMW M1
DeTomaso Pantera
Lotus Esprit
Maserati Bora (and Merak)

One thing I'm realizing as I compose this, is that although the 1970's were a dark time for the auto industry, there were still some very outstanding high-end vehicles available, especially in the first half of the decade.

This one was pretty easy for me because I've driven most of the cars on the list. For my own garage, it would be a toss up between the Boxer and the Daytona. I like the sound of the Daytona best, but it is the harder and heaviest to drive and the Boxer is so balanced and fast. Much as I like 911's, they were pretty squirrely during this time, esp. the turbo, which was the grim reaper of sports cars. Even so, I still could go with one. The Aston also ranks high as my luxo british sports car of choice

The Lambo Countach was too over the top and poorly designed for a driver. It also fell apart too easily. The Jaguars are some of the worst driving cars I have ever driven, not to mention unreliable and the Lotus Esprit felt fragile and buzzy with a 4 cylinder engine. The corvette wouldn't even rank a mention. I've driven a 71 convertible that was sorta fun, but not even in the same class as these other cars. They always felt like a rattly bit of junk to me.

That's because they were. I was a shop foreman at a Chevrolet dealer in the 70's, and after countless customer complaints about shoddy Corvette workmanship our DSM told me "We can sell every one we can make. Between making a few good ones and a lot of mediocre ones, we've chosen to make a lot of them".

Fast forward to today with the same brain trust.

You're a lucky man to have been able to drive so many of these vehicles. I only finally voted just now. I too was torn between the Boxer and Daytona. And while I think I would enjoy DRIVING the Boxer a lot better, in the end I picked the Daytona, because I think I would fit in it better (6'3"), love its sound, appreciate its legacy as the last front-engined V-12 GT car under Enzo, and the fact that I could get one from my birth year. I also really love the classic long hood-short deck design, though I think the older 250/275's were prettier cars. Now, if I ever have the opportunity to drive both, and can fit comfortably in the Boxer, I think my choice might flip-flop.

I know nothing about those except for the looks, and I have to agree.

David, this poll is too hard . . . so many great cars that are great for so many different reasons.

So, I'm gonna close my eyes and pick the Daytona (and hope that I get six more chances).

Ever since I was a kid (in the 1970s) my favorite car has been the Corvette, but I voted Ferrari because, frankly, I would never say no to a Ferrari. They beat the socks off of Porsche and Lamborghini.

Gumball Rally was my favorite car movie of all time. The cheesy plot is funny, but the main attraction is the fact that they use all these amazing vehicles, many of which (particularly the Cobra, Ferrari and 300SL) cost a mint today. Yet, in the movie, the cars were real and they drove them hard.

Here's a great scene, the doppler effect of the Ferrari at about 1:45 still gives me goosebumps:

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a Corvette lover. I'm not usually a fan of vintage cars, but the Corvette is always classic.

Don't worry Doc, we'll get to the 60's in another thread.

Since so many have chosen the Daytona, I'm now wishing I had picked the Boxer! And Russell, I got to ride in one about 20 years ago!
