GMT IIC or Deep Sea?

If you could have only one Rolex, forever, would you choose the GMT Master II Ceramic or the Deep Sea Sea Dweller?

Please justify your responses with specifics.

Well, I think it depends...
I own the GMT IIc. I travel quite a bit, and I like it extremely well. Bottom line, I consider myself a traveler more than a diver.

But, that doesn't stop me from drooling all over the pictures of the DSSD I see in this forum.

If you have a bigger than average wrist and a bigger fund, go for the DSSD. My 2 cents

As a follow up, I am 6'3" 265 pounds. Not small, but I do NOT have big wrists.

So I guess that rules out a future DeepSea purchase, .

Are you a traveler that requires the use of a multi time zone watch, or do you just like a beefy timepiece that gets lots of wrist attention.

I have both, so I kinda lean towards the DeepSea, but then again trying them both by simply visiting your local AD and deciding which one looks good on your wrist, or as some posters say "sings to ya".

IIc

Both are great watches, but I think the DSSD is too large for everyday use. The only exception being that your wrist is very large. DSSD is a little too heavy for me.

If you don't have big arms and wrists, the DSSD could look awkwardly large and thick. Be sure it's the look you want before you spend all that money. You did say "forever" and monster watches are hip right now. The GMT IIc is a masterpiece of classic Rolex style and engineering that is truly timeless and a heck of a lot more natural looking on a normal size wrist. While a classic, the IIc has fresh new features and has been called the greatest Rolex ever by quite a lot of people. Try them both and get the one that smiles back at you.

I like the Gmt II C....Deep sea is just too bulky though beautiful face....but if you have the wrist for it. I see for for it.

GMT - the DeepSea is less versatile I think. It's hard to hide the DS under a dress shirt, not that it needs hiding but I don't know what you do for a living.

My vote doesn't count (DEEPSEA all the way) 'cause I'm biased seeing as it's my only Rolex. But...have you noticed those rare individuals that own both have been giving their nod to the DS? VVVVEEEERRRYYYY interesting!!!

I think those individuals are the only ones with any type of credentials when it comes to chiming in on this question.

I am not sure what the poster above is suggesting but having owned both watches personally and worn them in a variety of situations, I would have to go with the GMT between the two. The SDDS was, IMO, simply too thick and bulky to have as an everyday watch. It is a much more specialized piece. If I could have only used it as an occasional weekend watch, it would have been perfect. Given your parameters, I would not think you would be happy with the Deepsea, although it is a very nice watch.

Oh course you are sure of what I'm suggesting...seeing as it's clear as day...then again, I've never been a fan of coy language.

Over the last 6 months that I've read posts on this forum on a daily basis, I have found the VAST majority of people that own both watches have freely admitted that once they brought the DS home, their other Rolex's (including the IIC) have received limited wrist time. Even this thread proves my point. If I was a buyer on the fence about which one to choose, that point would speak loudly to me. Thankfully I've never been on the fence, the choice was easy for me, but I can understand how some individuals can have a tough time deciding and therefore I was simply trying to point out this fact.

You sir are the ONLY poster to date on this thread that has admitted to owning both yet preferring the IIC over the DS (unless my reading comprehension has failed me...which is possible). That's great, albeit rare. I really don't care what people choose, everyone's different and you have to select the one that's right for you. I was just making a simple observation...as always, the numbers don't lie. Cheers.

Sure they do! If you deliberately limit the sample only the people who claim to own both watches, you've completely jacked the data. If, for example, I like the GMT IIc a lot and don't care for the DSSD, why would you expect me to own a DSSD?

I would choose the DSSD.

If I could only choose one Rolex the DSSD represents the best that Rolex has made to date.

Wow, that's a tough one! Well I'm going to say GMT-Master IIc because:

a) It's more functional (for me)
b) It has a lower profile so it can be worn everyday, more practically, and more comfortably
c) I think it can be worn on more occasions than the Deep Sea because it's a bit more classy (with the shiny links and bezel) and it looks a little less like a tool watch. So whether you're on business, at a wedding, or on your couch, the GMT-Master IIc works!
d) Its size better suits me

With all that said, the Deep Sea is, no doubt, a MUCH more marvelous piece of engineering! Every time I think about what it could do, it just blows my mind. It's amazing! It's just that I'm a bit biased towards the GMT-Master IIc for the above reasons.

Both are amazing watches, but even if I wasn't biased I think the GMT-Master IIc would win, mainly because of its size.

You know what though? Life doesn't have to be that hard! You CAN have more than one watch; you CAN have both the Deep Sea and the GMT-Master IIc! Even if it takes some time to be able to acquire both, it's possible and there's no rule against it. Isn't life great?

Just purchased both

Just purchased both as we are having a 10% price increase April 1,package deal so I was able to get a good deal.Of the two watches the Deepsea was to be the keeper as I own a seadweller and this was to be the step up.After wearing this for a day I think that the Gmt will be the keeper as it is a more practical size. That may change but those are my initial thoughts .Watch the for sale section and you will see my decision.

Fantastic observation! I think the DSSD is an amazing watch, don't get me wrong at all. The GMT IIC is a beautiful watch in itself, and I like some of the subtle advancements that Rolex has done with this watch (i.e. Bezel, clasp, and even the "green" writing and hand.). I tried on the DSSD, and I like the overall size of this watch, but I found that the thickness is a bit much for my personal taste. With that being said, the DSSD is a very bad a$$ watch, that looks great and definitely has a presence that screams that it should be noticed!

Rolex is making it very difficult for potential buyers to choose between these two excellent watches...

Deepsea

I own both and for me the Deepsea is untouchable. I have smaller wrists and I cannot understand why everyone says it makes it look daft. It looks amazing and is very comfortable despite its size. This watch is growing in stature every day and in my opinion is the best Rolex have ever produced.

I own both watches along with other Rolex sport watches, been wearing the DS for a month (24/7) since i bought it on 2/22/09. Amazing watch to date and it will grow on you everyday! DS gets my vote here!

GMT IIc since I can't see myself wearing a Deep Sea in a formal situation.

If I were to pick one, I would go with the GMT IIc. Sure, I do swim a lot, but 100 m of water resistance is enough for that, so I would pick the GMT II anyway because I also make a lot of calls abroad. Plus, the Deep Sea is quite a bit bigger than I actually need and like to wear in normal circumstances. On the other hand, I like the Submariner as more of an overall watch.
