Rolex Inflation

1964: You can buy an underwater watch for $39.95. This Rolex is $195.

2020: You can still buy an underwater watch for $39.95. The Rolex will now cost you $7,900.

It amounts to 1608$ in today's money. So it leaves a few Grands for: prestige/value retention/quality (in an era of disposable things)/service network... Really not a bad price if you ask me for a new Rolex.

Apples and oranges imho.

Plus it is not that 'price' has gone up, it is the value of central bank product (aka currencies) such as Dollar, Yen, the new Euro, etc have been highly devalued. Sadly, income has not kept pace with currency devaluation by central banks.

S&P was $76.45 in 1964. Today it’s sat at $3,276. Swings and roundabouts comes to mind.

You could buy bread for pennies.
now it costs more.

The difference really is that bread hasn't changed.
The process and the ingredients are much the same, as is the end result.

If you compare a 60's Rolex with a current Rolex, the build quality is different. The movement is vastly improved. The way of manufacturing has been streamlined.

Inflation counts for a huge variation. But the product quality is totally different.
