Apple Watch outsold the entire Swiss watch industry last year

https://news.sky.com/story/apple-wat...-year-11928148

I don't think it's that surprising, really... people LOVE Apple products (well, I don't, but other people do).

Apples latest Os5 doesn't support the 1st gen. of the iwatch.

So, 3 years and your 10k or more Apple Watch is already obsolete.

I guess part of their latest sales are folks who had to buy a new watch to upgrade; exactly what Apple is known for.

HATE apple. I finally couldn't take it anymore and had to dump my iphone 6s. No way I'm buying a tech watch to be forced to buy a new one a few years later. Also on my phone enough as it is. Don't need the distraction strapped to my wrist as well.

X2 Hate Apple also. I don't buy products made in China by forced child labor.
Start making them in the USA by well compensated adult labor and my opinion might change.

I get that you don’t like Apple and I understand that. But where did you see that Foxconn or other factories making Apple products use any child labor?

The factories are a big problem - but that is something I haven’t seen.

The Apple Watch Edition will start at $10,000, Apple announced during its event today. The 38mm Apple Watch Edition starts at $10,000 and the 42mm begins at $12,000, both with a sport band. There are eight different standard color and band combinations for the Apple Watch Edition, and the price will rise — all the way up to $17,000 — depending on which band and size you choose. The Apple Watch Edition is available in either 18-karat gold or rose gold.

Oh wow! I seriously thought that was a typo... I hadn't been keeping up with the latest Apple watch, or Apple anything other than I did try to price a new Mac Pro the other day...over $50K for one maxed out... For the first time in my life I might have to go with something other than the top end Mac... $50K?? Yikes. No way!!

It looks shocking indeed. But compare to a like for like branded windows PC workstation. It’s actually a good price. People who really need this kind of work PCs have no problem with the price. It may sound ridiculous to us to see the price of a decent car for a Mac but it’s not for the normal user. We can stick with our MBPs and iMacs...

Just because the watch doesn’t get the latest OS, does not mean it doesn’t work anymore. I still have the very first Apple Watch and it does still work just as well as it did when new.

I just don’t wear it anymore.

Indeed! I imagine that more disposable razors were sold last year than straight razors.

99.9% of Rolex buyers will not decide between whether they're going to buy an Apple Watch over a Rolex or vice versa in the luxury segment.
Lower tier Swiss watches might be at risk of substitution, sure.

The point is, a dramatic upward unit growth curve passing a slow downward unit curve. The novelty of mechanical watches will always appeal to a very small number of US, but "watch" will quickly mean a smart device to nearly everyone on Earth.

Imagine it is 1920 and car sales surpassed horses for the first time. "My Bessie will never rust, and no Ford will ever nuzzle my neck for a sugar cube" is similar to most of the responses we are posting.

Since 2019 numbers are not yet available I took 2018 as reference:

This counts ALL Swiss watches, including all quartz watches. Only around 7.5 million are mechanical. 16.2 million were quartz, taking 2018 numbers as a baseline. In 2018 the AVERAGE price of all mechanical watches sold from Switzerland was 2171 CHF. And 222 CHF for electronic watches. Average of all Swiss watches: 840 CHF

However with Apple this is likely sold watches, with the Swiss industry it’s exported, meaning sold to retailers etc, not to end consumers.

It’s all in here:

It’s really not so much a watch as it is a computer/phone strapped to your wrist.

Overall, I think it’s good news for (mechanical) watch lovers... surely a significant number of these new Apple Watch owners will look to mechanical watches one day, when maybe they otherwise would have not bothered with any kind of watch.

It's the Toyota Corolla of watches. It may be the biggest selling, but that doesn't make me want to buy it.

You can no longer say that "I don't buy things made in China" when almost everything you own is made in China whether you realize it or not.

I doubt I will ever wear an Apple Watch, Fitbit or any other type like either of these two, the closest I ever came was back in the Casio digital watch days but that was so long ago.
