Thoughts on Yatch Master

Hello,

My first post here, but I’m a daily visitor of this forum. Great amount of knowledge and expertise here.

My AD showed this piece to me and I really like it. Interested to hear your thoughts and perspectives on this watch from design, value and its position in Rolex portfolio.

Thanks in advance!

Really like it. Almost pulled the trigger on an Everrose and black dial. I’ve always had my eye on a classy TT sub. So I went with the 116613LN

I think it is a great piece. I always liked the Yachtmaster since the days when Rolex used Brad Pitt in advertisements for the original. Ahead of its time. Go for it!

The Yacht Master is sometimes mistakenly compared to the Submariner.

I say "mistakenly'' because it's depth rating is 100m compared to the Sub's 300m (to the cases are different) and its bezel rotates in both directions whereas the Sub's is unidirectional.

The YM isn't as popular as the Sub, even though it is a very attractive watch. One reason could be that its platinum bezel can be scratched, and would therefore be expensive to replace.

Personally, I find the YM a very handsome watch.

1. The first Yachtmasters were Submariner Mid-cased with GMT Casebacks (Since the GMT caseback was only good to 100m, that's the depth rating)

2. The first Yachtmasters were uni-directional bezels.

They weren't really differentiated from the Sub line until the late 90s.

The 16628 became the 16628B

(Photo from a 97/98 YM)

Lost it's Lug-Holes, Lost it's Sub Mid-case. Lost it's Unidirectional Bezel.

I chose the YM because to me its perfect in every way, nothing about it made me think twice.

You will find other Rolex watches hold value more than the YM (the Sub etc) but if you go that way you will probably end up with a watch you don't really like. Get the one you like and don't worry about future value. Get the one you are wearing in that photo :)

The Yacht Master is my first Rolex and I think it’s the most underrated model. Stainless steel with shiny platinum bezel kinda in between luxury and sports models so you can wear it anytime.

Though I have bought others like SubC, Pepsi, TT Daytona after it, it’s still my daily watch in summertime.

Nice this dial!

Would be interesting to see at some distance if someone has a pic.

I have the one with the blue dial and absolutely love it. I prefer wearing the slim curvy case over the newer blocky cases of the Sub and GMT Master II. Very versatile watch, great for any occasion.

Definitely looks and feels like the higher end more refined brother of the sub. Case is a good point. I think it looks fantastic

A newly released professional model with the brand new movement that people are seemingly desperate to see in current models (such as sub). I honestly don't know why the new 126622 isn't more popular. It's massively under the radar and I think really underrated. The case is a thing of beauty.

Google reviews of the 126622 and there's hardly any from the big watch websites. Perhaps now is the time to jump before Hodinkee releases a 'week on the wrist' video.

I would seriously consider one given it can be obtained relatively easily. Personally, my only reservations / questions would be;

1. how does the bezel stand up to daily use?
2. is it too blingy for every day?
3. I love the rhodium but unsure about the baby blue seconds hand. Blue and red could be the way to go.

I've had a few Submariners, GMT's and EXPII's in different variations over the years. The SS YM with blue dial has become my favorite and daily wearer.

I've been wearing my 116622 on rotation for the past 5 years. Now by far the one I wear the most, almost daily.

I really like this watch. The dial and bezel look beautiful to me, it's comfortable, the case profile is curvy and stylish. I use the smooth bidirectional bezel as a chrono, very handy.

It doesn't feel like an utilitarian watch compared to my SD43, feels much dressier and refined, almost elegant for a sports watch. They've achieved a nice blend with the Yacht-Master.

I own the blue dial version. It fits me like a 36mm watch yet has a large presence without being ostentatious like some of the really big watches. The dial changes from blue to deep black depending on lighting. I wear mine in a four watch rotation and have yet to see a bezel scratch after over 18 months.

The yacht master is a beautiful time piece. We can get into many reasons why you should buy one Rolex over another. Purchase the watch that gets you excited ! Good luck !

Comfortable and nice dial. I was somewhat disturbed by the large numbers on bezel but think I would have gotten used to it. Great summer watch.

(Tbh I am kind of looking at the TT YG with blue dial after seeing it on TV but it have the hollow link bracelet and a very long end lug which puts me off)

I had this with the platinum face.

Beautiful watch, wears great, is dressier than a sub what with the PCL and matte finish bezel.

For me, the downside was the bezel, which (in my case anyway) scratched easily.

YM resale, any color, appears to not be as robust as many other SS Rolexes. If that's important to you.

The YM will be my next purchase. The only reason I haven’t pulled the trigger yet is because I’m still not sure which dial I want and I recently added a new watch to my collection. I like to spread my purchases out so I can get enjoyment out of latest purchases...

I'm new here and about to buy my first Rolex (Sub Mariner), but I have this one marked as my second. Great looking time piece!
