Watches in the garbage.

*Sigh* I just received a response from my older brother who was in possession of a few pieces of great interest to me. One was a SS chrono pocket watch that was my mothers- I remember playing with it as a young kid- the other was my nanny's swiss wrist watch which was quartz.
The guy threw them out! It baffles me... why would you just throw away such things?
*sigh* I guess its the money... He doesn't understand sentiment perhaps.

I am waiting a reply to my furious response in hope they may be at my mothers house somewhere. I'll be posting pictures if I get my hands on them. The pocket watch was absolutely astonishing as I remember it.

What is the term which describes the phenomenon of reminiscing something from childhood as being perfect? Learned it in psychology... I'm slipping.

That is terrible, he should have at least asked you first. I was really unhappy that my father's watch went to someone outside the family. It was not worth much, but it was something that reminded me of him. There would be no point buying another one the same, as it's not "his".

I hope you find them

Did you get asked if you wanted anything before it was thrown out? Just asked this because I had to clean out my Grandmothers house recently after she passed away. My uncle and I asked all the family what they wanted from the house, everybody said "nothing" . Six months later I get asked , what happened to such & such and what happened to that. Not saying that this is what you did , you post just bought back some bad memories.

He said in the email "don't you remember me asking you?". My reply was "You know I'm obsessed with time pieces. There is no way I said I did not want them."

One man's trash is another man's treasure.

I occasionally throw things away or donate them only to find out later, I wish I still had them.

I seriously hope he was kidding and you get the watches you seek. Keep us posted. Good luck

That's pretty poor form. My nose would be pretty well out of joint in your place.

Jtvision, just maybe they will turn up, somehow!!! I had the job of cleaning out my Father's stuff after he died. I did ask in the family as to what each person wanted but still ended up making some mistakes. I also had to do the same for my Mom and again made a few mistakes!!!
It was very humbling go through their belongings and realizing these items represented the sum total of their lives!!!

As an avid watch buyer (yes, I am tooting my own horn), I am baffled when I buy a Breguet, or a Ulysse, or a Patek from individuals who tell me 'I have no idea where the box/papers are...' It is all a part of a set, when you find something that is original and complete it is like nirvana... But for the most part people don't seem to appreciate things that most of us do. Also when you find something less than 10 years old that looks like it has been through both world wars... It just kills me.

Lion: There is still hope. I have to wait it out till christmas when he'll be traveling back to Canada for the holidays. Claims they may be at his in-laws. My mother reassures me there is no way he would throw out the pocket watch as it was our Uncle Buds (not blood related) who was in WWII; making the piece that much more special to me.

My dad was about two throw these two out, but I quicky snatched them up. Nice watches, but not worth much.

That's too bad. Sad to see heirlooms like that just thrown out, no matter VALUE, it is invaluable to you.

On the other hand, I was all too happy to throw my Dad's old Seiko in the trash compactor when he got his Rolex this Christmas.
