Help me do the right thing...

My watch collection has got out of hand and I’m not going to add any more watches unless they replace an existing watch.

One of the watches I’ve had my eye on is the AP 26480 and whilst taking one of my watches in for a service yesterday, as if by magic, the boutique had received one in the day before.

So now I have a choice to make...

Should I swap my 15710 Diver, and add some cash (probably c.£15k) to get the 26480.

My relationship with the 15710 is a curious one. Currently going through a loving phase, but sometimes I accept it is just too big for me.

The 26480 is the same diameter but the case isn’t quite as deep and it wears a touch smaller, so arguably better for me. But it is still too big for my wrist unless being worn as a deliberately oversized watch, in which case it probably doesn’t make any different which one I have.

And if I’m going to wear an oversized watch, I want to wear it for active stuff and a very casual look.

So here’s the thing. I prefer the 26480 to such an extent that I can probably justify the extra dosh. But, whilst I’m happy to muck about (and do stuff like skiing) whilst wearing a £10k to £15k watch which is what my Diver is worth, I’m not convinced the same is true with a £25k watch, it breaks a barrier for me.

Should I go for the watch I like the best and accept I can’t use it quite as I want, or admire it from afar and wear my diver for fun stuff, and just enjoy it?

IMO if you can justify it then do it. Why wouldn’t you wear that watch for skiing? In the time that I’ve had APs I’ve always worn them for sport the only exception being golf and that’s because I find it uncomfortable. Skiing with an AP on my wrist has never been a problem.

Agreed 110%.

I’ve worn whichever AP I own at the time essentially every day, they’re extraordinarily comfortable and versatile.

The one time I went skiing I was so bad I was racing downhill completely out of control and in my panic to try and slow down I actually got one of my ski poles caught under one of my skis as I sped away down into oblivion. If I had had a watch on then I would surely have shattered it to bits. Never again.

Clearly it's your choice, but for me I'd much prefer the 26480 over the Diver. I get what you say about use against value, but your Diver looks in pretty good shape, suggesting you're fairly careful with watches, so if you're happy with the size (looks ok in the pics) I say go for it. As its Titanium it's light in weight too, which will make it comfortable for active use.

If you want the watch then I would get it. As far as wearing it for certain rough activities that is your call. I would believe the watch would fair better than you should there be a significant issue. Go for it.

I suppose it depends on how good you are at skiing, if you’re likely to fall off a chair lift or ski into a tree then maybe stick with the Diver.

I would go for it - I got to handle that Ti recently and it has really stuck in my mind. Between the titanium case and rubber straps, it must one of the lightest APs available today.

Token - roll with the 26480. It sounds like the "use cases" for when you'd be wearing the diver are not as frequent as the number of times you'd wear the 26480. If you feel you need a beater watch, a Seiko 007, while not as prestigious as an AP, will suffice for skiing, diving etc. Enjoy the AP's either way!

To be fair, I have a Sea Dweller 116600 which is my main beater.

I’d swap for that one as long as I’d get a good trade on the Diver.

Well, it’s pretty conclusive so far!! Going to now have to think hard about whether I find the extra cash or whether I trade the Diver and my Blue Dial 15450 (the latter I keep changing my mind on, as I have a silver dial 15450 and a black dial 15300...so whilst it’s a great watch, it’s surplus to requirements really).

I’ve never seen a photo you’ve posted of your black dial 15300? Does it not get worn much or does it hold sentimental value? I’ve seen your love for the 15450 (and can’t wait to get mine) so why not let your diver and the 15300 go to fund the ROC?

I wear my 116600 daily and surely you can use this for all your rough sporting activities then get the pleasure of, what sounds like preference, the ROC over your diver?

Good luck deciding

Only had the 15300 a couple of weeks. Just put it in to AP for a service. Agree that the 116600 can do all the tough stuff if I go for the 26480

Sounds like your heart is with the ROC, plus you have other watches to take skiing etc. I have different watches for different occasions, that is one of the main benefits and points of a collection.

As much as I like the 15710, I would definitely get the 26480. It wears so light and I love the 44mm pushers. I wear mine constantly. Plus they make a titanium bracelet for it as well in case you ever want to put it on a bracelet. Fantastic piece.

Diver it’s more special.
But in this case I go with AP chrono for 2 reason
1 It’s titanium so it’s very easy to wear
2 Because it’s the only AP ROO chrono who have the 2385 caliber from AP RO chrono!
Rest of ROO chrono have 3126/3840 who have many problems with chrono module.

I have that new Ti ROO.

And I absolutely love it.

No brainer imo. No contest either.

In my opinion absolutely not.

The size of the diver looks absolutely amazing on you. I don’t think it’s worth paying 15K extra for a very similar looking piece, excluding the chrono and titanium.

Plus you already have smaller watches like the 15450, SD4K, speedy reduced

Best of luck with the decision! Both great watches.

Just doing a look-back on the year and reading some old posts. I’d forgotten that i even debated this one. As it turns out, i did get the 26480, but as an addition to the collection rather than as a trade. So a perfect outcome!
