GMT-MASTER II 16710 vs SUBMARINER 16610

I want a SS sport watch.

Needless to say, I'm not going to take either of them diving. So just curious what the pros/cons are between the Black GMT and the Sub. Never owned either so just curious to hear form people who have.

Thanks!!

The GMT has the added feature of more than one time zone, sub doesn't. Does this really matter in todays age of smart phones. Of course not, but we all like cool features. If you aren't a serious diver, water resistance probably won't mater either, even the GMT is good enough for a backyard pool or occasional beach activity. The GMT has a cyclops for date, sub can be had with or without cyclops. So you can decide which you like better. For what it's worth, I wore a black on black GMT for years and was told a dozen of times... "nice sub." So, not much visual difference from across the room.

Two different watches for two different purposes.

You choose one that matches your lifestyle, needs, or desires. Kinda like boxers or briefs.

Black ceramic GMT Master II has been discontinued. Sub remains in current production. Unless you can find a Black GMT that’s ONS, you will need to find a good condition used piece with full papers/box. Obtaining a new Sub (with or without date) is a challenge as well but is possible). Each is iconic with its own history. A Rolex fanboy will spot the different bezel at first look and know the difference.

They look identical to most of the population. GMT is more useful and thinner to wear, but Sub is slightly more iconic than the black GMT IMO. Out of those two, I would go Sub.

Black gmt. No comparison. More slender, splash of color, gmt function and option to change bezel inserts and bracelet

I've had both and personally enjoyed the sub more just because of how comfortable it was, the glide-lock system is a godsend for getting that perfect fit regardless of the situation.

That being said the GMT does have the additional time zone function which i found especially useful when travelling, the GMT also has polished links in the middle of the bracelet where as the sub is brushed giving it that slightly more dressy feel?

Both excellent watches though, well built, comfortable, versatile, cant go wrong with either really.

Think you are talking 6 digits here which are quite different to the 5 digits OP is asking about

Both are excellent watches and the lower depth rating of the 16710 would be larger irrelevant to the majority of wearers - the GMT can go as deep as most people ever will? It's also possible (or at least was when things were not quite as 'tight') to swap or retrofit a Sub fliplock clasps onto a GMT giving a little extra security. (I have one on my 16700). Anyway, both watches are worth going after if you get the chance - good luck!

Will you wear the watch every day? Will you wear it to work? Will your line of work beat up the watch?

As an owner of a 16710, you know my answer. But if you work in an environment where the watch will get beat up, the Sub is a tougher watch. Not that the GMT isn't, but the Sub is tougher.

The 16710 is a pain in the ass to set. You put up with it because the watch is awesome. The 16610 with its 3135 quickset date is a breeze by comparison. Something to consider if you want a weekend wearer that is stopped for the rest of the week..

??? It can be argued the crystal and caseback and crown are thicker but that's about it. Identical materials and construction otherwise. Both look cool beaten up Imo.

I’d argue an Exp II or DateJust with smooth bezel is tougher than both for everything other than WR rating of the sub. A watch without a rotating bezel has less to go wrong or break.

Out of the 5 digit sub and GMT I’d go GMT in black. Thinner and added functionality give it the edge.

I’d pick the 16710. The red hand gives it a pop of color and you can switch inserts if you want a change.

I'd go for the 16710 if I were you. Amazing watch with Pepsi bezel, nice with Coke bezel and the option of the all black bezel so it has the looks, at a glance, of a Submariner.

I own both and wear the 16710 far more. The 16710 does everything that a 16610 does & more. Plus, the GMT's has a that beautiful 24 hr red hand and the bezel is bi-directional. The GMT also has more OEM bezel insert colors.

I have them both and definitely 16610 Sub. To me it's best 5-digit Rolex ever, hands down.

I wrote a blog about this. Check it out. Cheers.

I've had them both and prefer the Submariner. I actually like the extra weight and thickness. Also, the GMT bezel was a little too busy looking for me.

I’ve owned several of both over the years. This is just my personal opinion but if I were to go 16610 I would get the LV. To me it’s a much cooler watch. That being said, I really love the 16710. It’s one of the best modern Rolex references ever made. With the ability to swap bracelets and inserts it’s extremely versatile.
