Is Rolex moving towards more bling?

I wonder as I sit here looking at my day\date and watching the sifi channel, do you think that Rolex is gearing their line more towards the "bling" line rather than the real, professional models? Yea I know the DSSD is new, but compared with the tons of basel rolex's and rolex's website, most are all crusted with diamonds

I think they are SHOWCASING more bling, but all of the other models are still available. Everybody knows what a Rolex is, and what a Rolex looks like, and they still make all of the iconic models. But I think right now in this economy they are going for the "people who can afford lots of diamonds" demographic with the middle - upper class struggling. Also, they clearly need to start targeting more and more women, I think the Flowery DJ's do just that.

Hey not everyone knows. I ALMOST tossed a 1965 GMT Master in the trash because I thought it was fake because the cheap ass riveted bracelet and the plastic crystal. I knew the name but that is it. Had no clue what a sub was or what a GMT was or that Rolex even made so many models. That was a year ago today I would like to think I could hold a somewhat intelligent conversation about Rolex now.

Rolex themselves have stated they make luxury goods. Some feel the move started with the advent of WG surrounds.

I remember showing a buddy my Rolex watch and he said "oh, nothing special...but it's a Rolex.." Then again I have a regular GMT and Sub....the general public thinks of Rolex as some expensive watch (which it is) but they imagine diamonds and precious metals and the flashy stuff that comes with the name.

The professional models are my favorite lines of Rolex but the general consensus is that you are paying for something fancy. They have to live up to the name....

There is a lot of competition compared to say 20 years ago....Rolex is trying to be creative and fresh....but the real question is is that always good.....remember NEW COKE when it was launched.....and it failed and Coke kept the tried and trusted verson.

they are not going towards more bling. They always have had bling. Check out some of the jewel encrusted watches from the 80s. Gold surrounds have been around at least since 1970 on the Gold Subs, as have polished center links. Rolex has not changed much at all.

I sure hope they arent moveing in that direction. But every thing i see is pointing us in that direction.... I guess they dont follow what we the people want. Less bling keep a tool watch just that and please no diamond's on my Daytona Thank You.

Also for the record 36m is and always has been a mans size and i will where a pre 2009 DJ or DD with pride and class' just for the record.

Some additional thoughts from one of my previous posts: I don't think that Rolex will discontinue their tool watches. They still make money off of them, so they're going to be around for a long time (maybe forever). Although, of the blingy models, I think Rolex is trying to make them more blingy and sexier. And remember guys, judging the future of Rolex's line from Basel pictures gives you a biased point of view because the show is also about jewelry, not just watches. So obviously Rolex will put their blingiest models on display as opposed to the others.

I thought my 16710 GMT has too many polished surfaces, so yes, IMO Rolex is moving to bling big time.
