Rare DD dial?

Hi guys, been thinking about a Date Day (not limited to vintage, but current lineup offers nothing I want, or perhaps Rolex would bring out more dial variations later on)

I am more after a 36mm YG, and if I go down the vintage path. What's the rare dial out there? Upon what I have found so far,

Stella dial
Onyx
Wood
Custom dial eg Tiffany dial

Any other particular dial I should look out for? Ideally at least it comes with single quick set function.

For me, yellow gold + wood is a killer combo. Lots of different wood variations as well.

Those are some super-rare and super-expensive birds you've listed there. I don't know if these are good options for a first Day-Date - they're very deep-end.

Maybe start with a regular 1803 (or a little later) and then get into deeper waters if you like it.

Correct me if wrong, yes I know the exotic dials are rare, but from a quick glance, there seems quite a bit selection on Chrono 24..

Yes, I like some of the wood dials I have seen.
Say between wood and stella, which is harder to find? and I presume the harder to finder, then the more expensive it's.
I guess the reason I want a rare dial is that because I can't find those anymore in modern DD, and one day if a modern DD releases something I like, maybe it's easier to sell say a stella DD than a regular 1803?

I don't know, I could be wrong. I just started looking into it very recently.

I wouldn't be buying any expensive vintage from Chrono 24, especially not if I were a newcomer in the field. It's even more of a minefield than Fleabay. The chances of getting fleeced are high. Go with a trusted dealer.

I was wondering, can you buy a standard DD and then ask Rolex to put an Onyx dial on it?

I assume not, else it's easy to get a clean 12k example, add an Onyx dial and sell it for a nice profit.

Rolex only has a very few examples of service dials remaining for the 4 and 5 digit models. Usually just white, champagne, gold, the basic colors only really unless you send your watch to Geneva to their restoration department but by then you have sunk more than its worth into it.

I have a 4 digit- your saying i can purchase a white dial for my YG- I wish the Roman White but Regular white would be great is there any place that i should Look .. would love to purchase a Red Qtrs dial.

- The WG Wide Boy is so great looking - Those always seem very masculine, somehow.
- Is the burl dial birch, do you know?
- Is the sunburst blue dial in white gold, or yellow? Beautiful condition, those blue dials are rarely so flawless.
- Last (but emphatically *not* least), that “Wowza!” waffle dial. Any info would be welcomed - I’ve only seen these before in the Phillips 2015 DD auction catalog. Date (or first few digits of the serial number)? Where was it sold when new? It’s a 18038, with silver center and cream/white minute track surround?

Those are some of the nicest watches. The 1803 WG Blue, I'm not used to seeing that color of blue, and like already said the dial condition is mint !! And the Waffle watch, it's already saved on my desk top, wonder though if they come in any other colors ?

1. How to tell if those diamonds are factory?

2. Been told black dial with diamond on YG is very rare, true?

The dial from your link is definitely factory original.
We can tell from the diamond setting.
For other best aftermarket sometimes we need to check the back of the dial to confirm.

I post my DD 18239 dial here for checking and to show diamond setting and the stamp at the back. It is currently on sale in ebay :)

Guys, opinion wanted.

A couple of nice Onyx 18238 pop up this week.
Say for the similar price
Onyx 18238 vs a brand new DD 128238 (the 36mm YG with green diamond set dial).

18238 Onyx - I like it, clean, classic and unique and will probably never see it again on a new DD. But it's preowned, I obviously need to do more homework etc etc (and more risk too).

128238 DD, green dial with diamond set.. Well... easier to tell time and it's brand new I don't need to worry about anything. Better specs, it's a dial I do like too.

Personal taste aside, how would u choose?

Id fancy the 128238 as well. 10000% future classic. For me that new bracelet end link configuration makes a huge difference in the looks.

From your statement seems 128238 suit you better. Just go for it
