Got the call but had to say no !!!

Just received the "call" from an AD informing me that my first and what was to be only Rolex Explorer 1 was in stock.

However since I went on the waiting list I have been furloughed and feel that there is a 60/40 chance that I won't be going back.

I spoke to my wife and she said that if I wanted to pull the trigger that would be fine as I had put the money aside, but deep down I guess I knew it would be selfish to proceed at this time of turmoil.
When I do pick up my first Rolex with my wife I want to enjoy every last second of the experience and not let it be clouded by a slightly guilty feeling.

The AD seemed to be very understanding and have had this happen a few times recently and could see that I wasn't a time waster and has said that as soon as I'm ready they'll put me back on the list: Time will tell

Well done.

You want to enjoy the purchase, not have worry from the moment you purchase it.

You’ll get another

Very sound decision. When the purchase does eventually happen it will be much more satisfying.

Good decision on the Explorer. You will get another opportunity to buy one in the future.

If it was the SS Daytona or SS SkyDweller, it would have been a different story

Why are you so certain it would have been different for the OP if it was a skydweller or daytona?

What if he actually doesn't like either of those two? Not everyone is selfish and will buy something just to flip.

I do not know OP personally and I believe he may a sound decision. However, I am sure there are plenty of people here who would flip a watch and have flipped watches in the past for a profit.

I have never sold a Rolex I have purchased. So I wouldn't know what flipping is like. But you read enough of it here and have to accept the fact it is fairly common. There are so many flippers out there that it is a lot harder for ADs to separate the genuine watch enthusiast from flippers.

Judging by your back-story, you've 100% made the right decision based on the uncertain times ahead for the UK economy.

The opportunity will come again so always better to pull the trigger from solid foundations and being 100% comfortable with what you're doing. Nothing worse that committing to a major financial purchase with nagging doubts let alone a world-wide economic shut-down playing out in front of us.

I hope it works out for you and you're able to return to your role post-furlough.

Well that stinks, but you made the correct choice. When the timing is right that same AD should be able to get another for you in good time. A positive aspect is that they know you're not a flipper. This can be helpful to you regarding future requests.

That's rough, Steve, but I would have done the same! Nobody (and certainly not all the talking heads and "experts" on the BBC and CNN) knows how all this is going to pan out economically. Things are bad in the UK and here in Germany, despite some restrictions being loosened, and I'm holding on to my money too. The Explorer I is a really great watch, well worth waiting for when times change for the better! And I hope you don't lose your job!

Here’s to hoping the furlough is just temporary.

Totally. And I think you made a mature and sound decision. That purchase would probably feel flawed to you even if you come out fine soon which I sincerely hope will happen.

Cheers
