"Spider webs" on Rolex dials...... Transitional models!
Hi friends,
Almost all of you might know that Rolex changed from matte to glossy dials for their sport models mid to end 80s. The very early and 1st series produced dials had some inconsistency in the lacquer which was changed after a short period.... Why...?! Just see what happened Tried to make some good pics. to show you the so called "spider web" effect and hope you enjoy next one..... next one..... next one..... |

Very cool! Are the ones with the spider effect more desirable? Is it better to leave it that way if you have one, or would it be better to replace it with a new one, value wise?

The finer spider web effects look almost like leather!
That being said if i had a vintage rolex and that happened, I'd take it in stride as a compliment with the worn out lume and scratch magnet acrylic! |

I'm bumping this up because I'm still wondering about the value of a dial with or without?

The "crazing" only occurred on glossy dials and since most of the glossy dials also had a sapphire crystals, many collectors have chosen to spend their money elsewhere! IMHO, a watch that has a crazed or spider webbed dial is not as desirable as the same watch without.

I have many of these dials and I said I will keep them until the next mania maybe they will be included in it. Personally I cant stand to look at them in a watch. The dial makes a watch and these spider dials just don't do it for me.But I suspect when and if the vintage market heats up in the future the transitionals will be the focus so they might have there place.
