First ever Rolex

Came here for advice. 30 years old. “Entrepreneur” (my own excavation and rental business I started 6 years ago). The reason that is important is because I’ve hit somewhat of a personal milestone. To celebrate I’ve always wanted a Rolex since I was a little kid (because my dad has one).

Looking for advice on what you guys think would be a good first Rolex. I really like the Green Day dates

Great way to celebrate. A few questions though...

1) Budget?
2) How do you want to wear it? Is it for special occassions, everyday, weekends, work, sports....that sort of thing

I should have provided that information. Honestly the budget on the first one would probably be $15,000 and less. The watch would be worn only for special occasions which makes me lean more towards style than the actual watch function. With my line of work I wouldn’t want to wear it on a day to day basis.

I also look at this from an “investment” standpoint. It’s something that someday my kids will cherish when I’m long gone. Hopefully they will look at it the same way I look at my dads Rolex.

I feel this will be one of many however. I would like to start a collection as it’s something I have a passion for.

I assume your talking about the DD40 Olive dial? If your starting your collection with a DD40 well your starting at the very top and anything after that probably wont be anywhere near as special for you.

I might suggest you start with a SS piece like a Sub or GMT. Maybe even a Explorer II or DJ41. Those are better as a first piece imho.

Yes, I agree. May not want to go THAT expensive out of the gate. I should have clarified the DD40 was more of a reference towards my personal taste as far as looks.

Then I would look at a Datejust 41.

Plenty of options for dial and metals, you should be able to find one that suits you.

Fluted with Jubilee is the way to go.

Your first Rolex should always be the one you yourself wants to own and wear thats the only advice you will ever need. And the watch you choose is the only thing that matters its that simple, good luck on your choice of watches.

I don’t totally agree with this. I started thinking about Rolex before I found this forum and I had a couple I’m mind I wanted. After researching this forum and getting feedback from other members on their experience I eventually went in totally different direction and 10 years later am still happy with my choices. I have actually come to dislike the pieces I originally wanted.

Congrats on the milestone! If you want instant prestige, aren't overly concerned with resale value, and want the watch immediately, the DD is a great option. If you're willing to wait longer, or have a lighter budget, check out the SS Sports Models. At 30, I would personally opt for a SS sports model to commemorate and look into a DD later in life, but that's purely a personal choice. Choose the model that speaks to you and be sure to post some pics!

The WG green dial is one of my favorites. Also really like the RG. It’s a great choice, post pictures when you get it.

It seems that you already know what you want.
So go for it, don’t look back.

And I love that reference so please post some pics if you get it.

Sub, GMT, or, if you have the wrists for it, the Explorer 2 given the nature of your business

I suggest that you go on Rolex’s website and look at what they have there.

My suggestion would be just like the others: buy the one you like the most. And I hope for you it’s not a Daytona or a skydweller!

What you will discover soon, even if you want to buy it, you can’t.
Part of acquisition of the watch will be the search.
Be prepared to pay more than msrp for the coveted references.

If the Day Date is the watch you've been drawn to since you were a kid, and because the olive DD is your reference for what's your personal style, I'd say just go with that. Yes, it starting pretty advanced in the lineup, but you're a CEO celebrating a milestone so it fits. Plus, the purchase history will open the door for you to get those hyped SS pieces down the line

Datejust - 36 or 41 depending on your preference and how it fits/looks on your wrist.

I had the RG Olive DD40 as my first own Rolex because I knew I’d always lust after a President it if I got anything else along the way. Turns out the watch doesn’t work for me at all and after a year I sold it and used its value towards the three Rolexes that now anchor my collection. The DJ41 is a solid recommendation if that’s the style you want. But starting out and for about $15k I’d get a 16570 and a 116710LN and call it a day. Turns out I really like variety from multiple lives than having it all tied up in a bigger piece.
