AD: did I commit a party foul?
Finally got an AD to take my info for a ss sports watch. I’m wondering if I did myself any favors by saying I’d be open to any of the 40mm options (SubDate or no date, GMTs) or if I should have specified. Know this is something I should have asked beforehand, but in the experience of others, does this kind of flexibility help or does it signal something undesirable? FWIW, I didn’t leave any room for doubt in our conversation that I know the product line.

Yes, the question is what did they do with that information. Likely doodled a picture while you were giving your name and phone number.

You sound like a flipper when you say things like, I will take any 40MM SS watch you have. AD's do not like flippers. I doubt you will get a call anytime soon. AD's want buyers who know what they want and are not just buying something that they may or may not keep. With Rolex you need to find a watch or two that you want and let the AD know you are interested in those models. I have walked in twice and told my AD specifically what I was looking for and both times they pulled out what I asked for, SD43 and GMT Batgirl.

You know, I've been wondering about that. You'd think they'd love flippers, as they'd be the most reliable customers...

But if you walked into an AD, introduced yourself as a flipper and told them you wanted to buy a BLNR to flip the next day...and then added you were interested in bundling some full PM pieces with it. That BLNR would come out pretty quick no matter what your plans for it were |

My personal opinion. I think the idea of ADs losing status because they’re selling to flippers is internet urban legend. Flipping is a byproduct of the incredible hype and demand. Isn’t it the level of hype that all brands strive for? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Will offer you the easiest one available and then demote you for all other models. Be specific about your main priority watch. Also saying "any will do" will potentially flag you as someone who is thinking of flipping or worse, someone to not take seriously.

What I was afraid of. It was a longer conversation in which I started out inquiring about a blnr, and I think it was pretty clear that that was my top priority, but maybe I should call back and reiterate. The truth is, though, I’d be excited to get my hands on any of the models. (Not a flipper.) Ah well, I’m realistic about the prospects of getting a call anyway.

The best way to prove you are not a flipper to an AD is by stating up front what you want (even if it's a couple of models), AND specifically state that you don't want something that is extremely popular (even if you might later one). For instance: you want a black Sub or a Pepsi...tell the AD you are not at all interested in the Hulk, Batman, etc. Even better if you can be offered one and turn it down; then they know you really want the watch you're asking for. If I got a call from my local AD about anything other than the YM or Daytona that I want (have only inquired about the former; not even asking him to put me on a list for the latter, as I suspect I'd get offered one without being on any list if it was ever going to happen, anyway), I'd say "thanks but no thanks/all I would be doing is turning around and selling it, so it ought to go to someone else."

I think you are okay, no foul. If they actually took your name and someday they call you, they will offer you something you didn't ask for. You asked for any Steel Sports 40mm watch. They will call and offer you a Deep Sea or an 18K gold yacht master. Basically the watches you want are the watches everyone wants and you don't have purchase history. It's not you, they do this to everyone.

Until you know exactly what they do with your info, your worries are just premature.

Wouldn’t worry about it. I said the same thing to my AD but they would only allow me on 1 list so went with BLNR and I got it.

There is no list.
You buy stuff, the SA thinks you will buy more, they call you when they get more stuff for you to buy. They won’t waste limited availability items on dead ends. |

If you said any 40 and CE then you sound like a careless flipper/Instaboy.

The SA did say there was no “list” per se, though I wondered whether that’s what they would say even if there were one.
It’s all got me wondering whether Rolex isn’t inadvertently creating flippers in their attempt to deter them: that is, folks like me feel compelled to buy watches we don’t actually want (and so end up selling them nib) just to build a relationship toward what we actually want. I’m guessing a little searching here will reveal that this specific issues is well trodden ground. In any case, I have no intention of falling into that trap. |

My paranoia (and your wise and funny responses) got the better of me; just got off the phone with the SA. I clarified that BLNR was my top pick and that I was mindful of not wanting to sound like a flipper. (I figured there was no harm in just saying that---at this point, cards on the table.) He laughed and said "we do watch out for that!" but that he hadn't been worried about that in my case. I think the lead-up conversation I'd had with him earlier might have dispelled any such doubts.
He also told me that since my initial call, he'd participated in a staff meeting that covered allocations between now and the end of the year and that it's not looking good in general for any of the folks awaiting ss models, but what else is new? Well, this post is on the record now. If/when I get a call, I'll update. Not holding my breath, but honestly, this is further than I've ever gotten before. Thanks for your input. I learn a lot from this forum. This was a good example, though, of me doing things back-asswards. |

Who cares what a AD think!
Why worry about them? OP why are you even buying from a AD? You must like over paying for something that drops in value the day you walk out the store. |

So I’ve been on a list for a hulk and blnr for nigh on two years.
Went into the AD on the off chance they had an explorer ii knocking around for my 15 anniversary. Been told they go go via the “list” but at the same time there’s two hopes: Bob Hope and No Hope. Got told how about an air king? Thanks but not for me. Don’t want any more no date pieces etc. I’m done with Rolex until things stabilise. It’s just so frustrating. I’ve never flipped in my life and only intend to grow a collection not trade but I guess they can’t know that for sure but still... I’ve even deliberately not bought diamonds and used watches I’m interested in to get my own back. Petty and pointless I know but this can’t last for ever. Certainly not I this new economical climate but who knows? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
