My Son is recovering from surgery...

and we are builging a fort...

We could use any ideas for buidling a fort. With permission - from the boss of the house we have taken 4 dinning room chairs - multiple blankets and a bit of fishinig line... The fort is nice - my son even slept in it last night. It is defended by a battery of nerf defenses and other secret technologies.

You would think that both of us are 12

Do any of you have any ideas or have had similar fun? We are doing this indoors as my son is recovering from surgery in his right ear. Nothing helps a young many heal like hanging out in a fort.

Thanks for your suggestions....

p.s a note from my son (Q)
thank you very much for your help. what i mostly need for my fort is defensive structures, so help me fight any possible enemies!
and for some pictures of the fort...

Wow! Hope everything is OK Jackson!! Didn't know.

I am afraid that my fort build talents are long gone. Haven't done one in about 45 years!

His name is Mijo (Me-Ho). Means my son or my boy in Spanish.

Here are some more photos for him! Enjoy!

And his first encounter with a neighbors cat that decided to take a nap in our flower pot.

Sorry to hear about your son's surgery, Jackson.

What kind of surgery are we talking about? Nothing too serious, I hope.

Wish him well from all of us and here's to a real speedy recovery.

Best - JJ

No problem young man! I hope you and you pup are both doing very well.

Mijo is a great dog in every way. Very smart. He can do all kinds of tricks and loves to go to McDonald's for a small cheeseburger! Of course he can't go inside, but we take him through the dive through. When he knows we are going he will dance all around the house in anticipation! So funny!

What did you have surgery for?

Get well soon and have fun building that fort!

Richard

Remove the bottom cushions from the couch...they're more stable and still soft. They make good sides, and will also make a good roof.

For higher ceilings on the fort, consider using step ladders for ceiling support, assuming your ceiling is a blanket or sheet.

To keep the sheet from falling off, bunch it up and use cloths pins to keep it tight on the corners.

My kids love doing the fort thing, and another way to go it is strip the couch and use the base structure as the 'bed' of the fort, and make the roof/ceiling over the back of the couch to the chairs you already have. Use the cushions from the couch to shore up the ends.

Good luck w/ the building, and hope your son feels better.

Good looing lad and glad he is doing well. Bet he is a lot like dad. Now, this will show you how lazy I am, but I bought a one man tent just for certain ocassions. Sort of like your situation. Anyway, glad the young lad is smiling.

Kia ora,

I hope your son feels better soon.

Hmmm...fort building tips.....it's been a while....well you could make some kind of a sign or a warning for those that dare to approach. If the fort has a door of some kind then you'll need an alarm so you know if you're being attacked by ninjas. I used to use bells from the Xmas decorations pinned to the blanket. And as previously mentioned all forts need ways to spy on people approaching. Don't forget you'll also need a secret exit just in case the fort gets over-run. Boxes also make good walls and doors, you can even cut windows that can open and close into them etc...

I'm glad to hear the surgery went well, and I wish your son a speedy recovery. Two years ago, my older son had eye surgery (he was 5), and it freaked me out way, way more than it did him. Kids can be pretty brave.

It sounds as if you already have your Nerf defenses ready...we have a rather large (and growing) arsenal of Nerf guns.

One thing we liked to do for indoor forts is to use a hand-knit wool blanket as the cover, instead of a regular blanket. It is a loose-knit blanket (you know the hand-knit look...lots of holes), so it lets in a lot of light even though we're in the dark. Conversely, we would turn out the lights and hold a flashlight looking out.

Flashlights are essential to have, too. My boys are totally in love with any flashlight we have around the house.

You should also have a steady supply of whatever is his favorite snack, for inside of the fort. That way, if your fort comes under attack from hostiles, you have all of the food you need.

Finally, you may want to read him a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, "The Land of Counterpane":

When I was sick and lay a-bed,
I had two pillows at my head,
And all my toys beside me lay,
To keep me happy all the day.

And sometimes for an hour or so
I watched my leaden soldiers go,
With different uniforms and drills,
Among the bed-clothes, through the hills;

And sometimes sent my ships in fleets
All up and down among the sheets;
Or brought my trees and houses out,
And planted cities all about.

I was the giant great and still
That sits upon the pillow-hill,
And sees before him, dale and plain,
The pleasant land of counterpane.

Have fun!

Hope your son recovers soon. I had tubes when I was young too. When I was a kid we would use a king size sheet that we would anchor down on the corners and use a box fan to keep it inflated.
