Unscrew the caseback but be sure to use the right tool or one of those soft caseback balls they work great and never a chance of marking it up.

All AD's have the proper tools, know how and pressure testing equipment to open the caseback. Wait till you do the 5 year service and let your watch tech open it in front of you, there's plenty of pics on the world wide web to get a look inside. |

I agree. Plus, there must be some photos of that movement somewhere on TRF (or even on Rolex's website).

I have seen many videos of casebacks being removed but I have never seen a torque wrench used when the case back was replaced?

Eddie, I've seen the pressure tester thats to be used to test all Rolex watches including the SDDS, $10k.
Hold on to that $3 caseback remover, the ball version. Last edited by rescue7; 19 April 2009 at 01:56 PM.. Reason: sp |

How many AD's would have one. Most AD's in Australia would send your Rolex to Rolex Australia to have a link put on.

If you open the case back and close it properly, is the watch still water-proof?

But what is really important is the fact that a professional watchmaker knows how much torque to apply when screwing down the case. Not sure about the repurcussions if this part of the operation is NOT carried out in tune with Rolex specifications. JJ

In my opinion NEVER open your Watch!!!!!
Let the pros do it and ask to see when you need service or adjustment.....even if you are careful it is my understanding that this is to be done in a controled DUST Free environment.....even in that case there are posts here from time to time with "dust Spec" under the crystal.

I have opened every watch I ever owned. I have all of the correct tools, and a watch maker that is willing to pressure test them any time I feel like it.
I attempted to disprove a theory a few months ago about opening a factory sealed Rolex with a ball of duct tape. I thought there was NO WAY this could be done... Well, not only was it done... But it was done fairly easily. The 16610 that I have opened with fairly little effort, and it SHOULD HAVE BEEN still factory sealed (unless someone at the AD had opened it). My biggest fear has never been OPENING the watch, but accidentally hacking something up while it is open. |

I got a better idea, find some pics to look at.
You have a good chance of screwing up the gasket, heck some suggest always replacing the gasket after opening. You also have a good chance of getting dust or other crap it in. Plus, you're going to have to buy a fairly pricey tool to do it right, that if you're smart, you won't use again. Last of all, their beauty is mostly functional. Rolex doesn't spend much enerny on making them "purrty." |

Replacing the gasket every time after opening is totally unnecessary. You replace the gasket if the watch doesn't pass the pressure test and there's no other reason for the pressure "leak" (which would mean the gasket is worn out). I've never replaced any of the gaskets in my watches after closing them, and they've always passed the pressure test. |

I think everyone should know how to take off the caseback of their watch to periodically check it for dust deposits. Contrary to popular belief, chunks of dust or lint will work itself inside the case eventually even if it's pressure proof. Don't ask me how, but one time I found a big chunk of dust on the rotor of my Tissot and I only noticed it because the caseback is see-through. It was literally stuck on the outer edge of the rotor. So naturally I popped off the back and cleaned it out. Now what would have happened if I didn't have a see-through caseback? I would have never known it was there, so this is why you should check the inside of your watch periodically. |

Stay out of your Rolex. If you are curious about watchmaking there are plenty of cheap movements out there that you can play with. Here are a couple of eta movements on ebay at $3.99 right now. http://cgi.ebay.com/Lot-of-2-ETA-980-watch-movements-for-parts-N-O-S-swiss_W0QQitemZ360147439452QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_D efaultDomain_0?hash=item360147439452&_trksid=p3286 .c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1326|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1| 240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

I am more than content being able to listen to my own movements and looking at pictures of others if I want to see what's inside.
There used to be a Rolex ad. or a page in a booklet I am pretty sure which showed a watch with the caseback removed, the text went something along the lines of "take a good look at the movement, it's the only time you'll see it", kind of meaning it's there, it works perfectly and really only us should be going in there....I agree with them....to all you guys who know what you are doing, I am jealous, I'd love to see my movements and I am so please you can put posts up that allow us to see yours, however I am restrained enough to know I am not qualified to be in there.... Leave it be and stick to pictures, most are excellent......

Every time I buy a new car I take the engine apart and find it rather amusing to look inside ...
