Considering Unusual Trade

So I have in my modest collection a Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse with blue dial that is from the mid 1970s. I've been shopping it around a little exploring some trade possibilities, but I'm receiving either lowball offers or no interest at all. It appears the watch doesn't have the value I thought it had.

I do have an opportunity now to trade the Ellipse toward a white dial Rolex Milgauss from 2009 with box and papers from a reputable source. I have been searching for a white Milgauss and this one is in excellent condition. I will have to add about three thousand dollars to make the deal.

I should add that the Ellipse is not my only Patek. I have a sport model as well that I have no interest in parting with.

I realize this is ultimately my decision to make but thoughts would be appreciated.

I don’t think you’re going to get any straight answer on this one. That’s a complete vintage wildcard you’re considering trading and the Milgauss itself is also considered a bit of a wildcard and not loved by a lot.

You really just need to go with what sings to you. It’s kind of neat having a vintage Patek like that in the collection *if* it actually gets worn.

Trade value is too low to consider trading it.

You should just keep it. The market might change in due time and these could become the next big thing..

The Ellipse at smaller size is not really desirable. Does it have gold bracelet?
The Millgauss not being a preferred one is still a Rolex and bigger more modern for casual styles preferred today.

I can’t speak much to the Patek or it’s trade value other than I think you have some room to negotiate that cash amount. I can attest that the White Milgauss is a really good piece. If you aren’t wearing the Patek then I’d pull the trigger.

My take is different; at this point the watch is a pretty useless possession if it isn't worn and it doesn't excite. Getting a watch that is really wanted is a good thing. I'd go with the trade and be done with it. Move on and enjoy something you really want!!! I love my Milgauss; it's a great watch and gains many comments each time I show it!!

As stated if you are not wearing the watch and it does nothing for you then move on. Get a watch that you will wear and enjoy.

If you have to add that much money into the trade, I presume your Ellipse is on a strap.

If it is the only classic dress watch in your collection, I would keep it there.

The Ellipse is on a strap. The gold mesh bracelet would add significant value for the gold weight, but This watch is on a Patek strap.

Except for time spent/lost, dealing with tire-kickers and scammers, people who complain after the sale etc.

If you don't wear it, and are comfortable with the cost of the trade, go for it. Someone else will end up with it and hopefully wear and enjoy it.

If you need to trade a watch to make a deal work, and ask on a forum if it makes sense, then it is likely worth your time to sell it yourself and get the extra money.

I would definitely keep an ellipse on a strap! I would really try and purchase a sports watch another way and keep the ellipse for when you’re wearing suit or dinner jacket. Either that or find someone who really appreciates the watch and private sell it. I would love to see pictures of it.

Also, google “Patek extract from the archives”. There is a process that you can go through where Patek can issue a certificate verifying that your watch is genuine and original. I believe that you can do this without even sending in the watch and just sending the pictures. I’m not an expert on this so I’m sure if I’m wrong somebody will jump in and correct me. It would be nice to have and it would definitely increase the value a little bit.

Is your Patek quartz? Some of them were, I think. If its mechanical, I would say keep it. What you can get makes it worth more to keep.

Validates my point that a watch is never an investment. The fact that you cannot trade a PP straight up for a bland Rolex model tells me that PP is a horrible investment with a very limited exception. Makes me wonder about some of the AP and RM stuff I see that looks like it came with a happy meal.

This post shows that you don't really understand the market or the economics. How can you say PP as a whole is a bad investment when some of their watches trade for 2-3x retail? Rolex has many dogs for watches, too, that depreciate or move very slowly but it also has total stars like the SS Daytona. The Ellipse is probably on par with a ladies Datejust when it comes to general desirability.

To the OP: If it doesn't bring you joy and is not being worn, get rid of it! Life is short
