Explorer 114270 vs 214270 vs new 2021
Tried 214270 multiple times on my 6.5 inch wrist. I have 2 subs including new 41mm 126610LV which wear great IMO. For some reason 214270 has always looked out of proportion on my wrist. The case and wide numerals give it a bubble or oval appearance. I have almost pulled the trigger a few times on 214270 because I have wanted an explorer 1 for a long time. Considering putting my name in with AD for 2021 explorer to be first "on the list". If 2021 is a let down will likely look for a clean 114270.
Any speculation on 2021 explorer 1? Hoping discontinuation of 39 OP and OP white dial may be making room for some updated explorer 1 options. One can only dream of updated 36mm explorer... |

Cannot think of anytime they downsized to a 36mm...likely remains 39mm or 39.5mm like the DJ 41 case size. I own the current 40mm AK and previous generation of sub no-date so waiting for the new movement before I add.

If new 36 isn't going to happen :( hoping they will slim down case proportions / bezel - more "vintage" exp 1 since 2021 is big anniversary year.

My AD has said that they have not seen an Explorer for quite some time now which is unusual in his own words, similar situation happened to the OP39 where the watches just stopped coming through, also not that many Explorer incomings as of late..

2021 is only a big anniversary year for the Explorer II though isn’t it - not the Explorer 1? Surely the next meaningful Explorer 1 anniversary will be 2023, 70 years after Everest was conquered?

My batting average predicting what Rolex might or might not do thus far is 100%. 100% WRONG! Since the current 214270 Explorer I had the same case dimensions as the now discontinued 39mm Oyster Perpetual, perhaps Rolex might upgrade their Explorer I to use the same case dimensions as the OP41? Or the same as the OP36? Or two Explorer I models using both case dimensions as the OP36 and OP41? Or neither? Anybody's guess.

What I have learned from experience with the discontinuation of the OP39 (a disappointment): Don't wait. They could easily crush your expectations.
What if they decide to make the Exp 41mm like the OP? Some think that would be crazy, but the OP39 and the Exp share the same case. It would seem logical for the new Exp to share the same case as the new OP41 moving forward. Maybe they make a 41 and a 36 using the new OP cases. Personally I would love to see a 37-38mm case for the Exp, but I think that's much less likely than a 41mm case. Who knows. Don't wait. |

If only new option is 41mm I'll look to buy a clean 114270 (which I should have just bought 1-2 years ago). I'm sure 114270 prices will keep going up but now I feel it's too close to spring 2021 to not wait and see what is released.

Yeah, I wanted a clean 114270 but they are going for nerly or more than the new 214270... I think I missed that boat already.

Imagine new 36 mm w/ modern 1016 ish dial .... would possibly be best Rolex ever IMO, if well done.

I took delivery of a BNIB 2007 114270 last week and it hasn’t come off my wrist yet. Prices are pretty crazy on both 14270 and 114270. 36mm is perfect. 39mm Explorers never spoke to me at all.

They all have different merits, the 214270 wins for me in terms of legibility and overall quality of case and bracelet. Just the bracelet alone feels like a different world when you have the older one on hand.

Had the 214170 and replaced it with the 114270 as disliked its proportions. If ever buy another Explorer 1 would be either the 114270 (latest model with rehaut) or an older 14270 with lug holes (preferred model)

50/50 chance that size will go up to 41mm, like what happened to the OP.
It's the only 39mm model in the collection now. Get it while you can! |

How do you know that in 2021 there will be a new Explorer? ...and if there is, it may not be 39mm, it may be 40 or 41. If you like the 114270 of 36mm don't wait. |

So, I've had similar discussion with AD about seeing fewer 39mm explorers.. i think bc of older movement and bc no longer producing case for 39 OP that exp 1 will get update even though upcoming anniversary is technically for exp 2. I really want to like the 39mm exp but its proportions are off on me. Decision is down to 114270 vs waiting until spring 2021. Really like 114270 but will wait on small chance of a killer new exp 1 release. If disappointed by 2021 releases I'll just have to pay more for 114270.

I needed everyone here to reassure me that rolex would be releasing a 36mm updated exp 1 with the perfect 1016 ish dial... not liking the pessimism. now that i think of it... are there no explorer dial options currently available in rolex lineup ?

Maybe I’m in the minority on these forums but I tried on both the 14270 and 214270 before buying and I immediately gravitated toward the 214270 for several reasons - the legibility, the full lume, modern bracelet, and I prefer the sizing on my wrist (I don’t even have big wrists). I never understood the people who say the dial proportions appear “off”. To me, it looks just right. However, as with everything, this is entirely subjective. But I’m thrilled with my 39mm 214270.
