Older Rolex watches used acrylic crystals. The first use of a sapphire crystal was the reference 1530 and 1630 Datejust circa 1975.

Hi Rafael,
Its standard on most lady SS TT DJ watches, mainly as the serial and model at the lug ends of the watch take up most of the space available :-) Eg: There are some solid 18K ladies president style that have a plain back. Cheers, Dave.
