Daytona advice needed - Please Comment!
Hi Everyone - this is kinda related to Jay's post...
Yesterday an AD offered to sell me a SS black-dial Daytona at MSRP if and only if I would also buy a lady DJ at MSRP. The Daytona was not at the store, but could be transferred within a day or two. They offered to ship out of state for me so that tax would not be an issue. So what's happening here? Am I being given an 'opportunity' (the privilege of skipping a waiting list)? Or am I just being baited into an expensive mistake? The only two models that interest me right now are the SDDS and this particular Daytona... Oh, BTW, they said if I were to buy just the lady DJ by itself, they would cut 10-12% off MSRP... ANY AND ALL INPUT/FEEDBACK/OPINIONS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! |

They're just trying to lure you in to making an expensive mistake in my opinion.. You should be able to get at least 15-20% off a lady datejust easily, so paying MSRP for it would be the same as buying two watches and paying a few grand premium for the Daytona. Personally I would be surprised if that AD would turn down an offer of buying a Lady Datejust at 15% off plus getting a Daytona at MSRP. If they refuse, go find another AD.

Since you've no interest in the ladies Datejust, I'd say look elsewhere.

I had a similar offer from a DFW AD before I got mine...
...they wanted me to buy a different watch as well as the SS. I passed, as I wasn't in the market for another one at the time, but if you are, no harm no foul imo: it is kind of a shady business practice, but if you were really seriously considering a watch for your wife anyway, go for it...just don't talk yourself into getting a watch you don't want.
But hey, it's coming up on Mothers' Day, major brownie points to be had here!! I am wondering if it is the same dealer that I dealt with, though, but I won't post the name in case you're still mulling.

IMO all these AD's are ready to deal at this point in time PERIOD (but you have to have a solid idea as to how much you are will to pay BEFORE you walk into the store). Know the discount range by shopping the competitive AD's before you go into the store you intend to buy from. I recognize that discounting among AD's is somewhat specific to the State you live in...but to purchase TWO watches and not getting at least 20% or more is ludicrous. Push for 25%-30% on the DJ (low ball) and try waiving taxes in addittion (since most AD's are not playing price games with the Daytona). Worst case scenario is that they will say they can't (then be prepared to walk out of the store)....they will then try to appease you in some manner.I bet they will say they can't do 25% but will come down to 20-22%

Hi. There was a thread by NYLAWBIZ, who bought several watches in NY and got 20% off and no tax. Find the thread, print it out, relay info to your AD, and say "can you beat this?"

That would be too much for DJ.
The AD is trying to sell you the Daytona at a premium. My AD had offered me Daytona last I asked for a friend even though my friend had never bought anything from the AD. AD was giving me "FACE" if you know what I mean. As mentioned, walk away. You'll save at least a grand by looking elsewhere.

I bought a Daytona ss/black dial a few weeks ago and got no discount on it, but the dealer was willing to discount a GMT2 20% if I bought both and this was in Palm Beach Florida where the rich are still buying!
They even held the Daytona a week for me while I sold another watch. I don't think demand is nearly as high right now as in the past few years. JMHO |

Don't get pressured buying another watch. There are dealers selling at MSRP alone. Check out the For Sale Forum here....seen some great deals.

That is a shady busisness practice if you ask me. I would have a few choice words for a AD that tried to scam me like that.

You can easily pick up a Daytona on the grey market for slightly less than list. I wouldn't do it, even if i was in the market for the dj, as you should never pay full price for that watch... especially in this market!

That's bad business to bait a client.
If you want a Daytona, that's what you want. The ladies DJ is not a part of the equation. Tell the AD you will buy the Daytona at 10% belows MSRP and no DJ. See what he says. Times are bad, carrying stock like a Daytona is a burden for the AD. |

There's a hell of a lot of depreciation in that ladies DJ.
Walk on by.

Sounds like it was an out of state AD that make the offer?
If you want a Daytona, then I would go to your local AD and only pay MSRP or get one from the Grey Market. Allan |
