I know these are not for everyone, but...

...I had the opportunity to choose 1 of 2 16710s when I bought mine a few months ago. I chose this one (1989) because of the dial. I'm sure many would have chosen the alternative (1999) which had a flawless dial. I don't think this dial will make is any more valuable. In fact, I think it's probably less valuable. But that point is moot since I have zero intention of selling it. I enjoy it, and its dial, way too much!

The cracks can only be seen if the light hits the dial just right.

If you like it and have no intention of selling it, you made the right choice. FWIW, I think the dial lends character.

That's nice! Several years ago, a trusted local shop had a preowned "spider dial" sub with date. I repeatedly looked at it but didn't buy it because I thought they were asking too much money. I kind of regret not getting it.

This and the other 16710 I was looking at were +/- $500. And to be honest, I think this one was actually cheaper because the other one was newer (but I don't actually recall). I don't think it had SEL but it did have Superluminova. I prefer the tritium dial, so another win there!

Obviously there’s no right or wrong decision there, but I would have made the same choice you did. I love the added character, and I always prefer tritium lume. Great photos!

RSC will always want to replace that dial, because of the risk of paint flaking off and messing with the mechanism. It may effect any warranty they offer after service of the watch if that dial remains in place.
I’ve had this happen. I kept the old dial and they serviced the watch, less a warranty when I got it back.

I figured RSC would want to replace it. Fortunately, it's been recently serviced (not by RSC) and I shouldn't need one for years to come.

There are plenty of good watchmakers who are perfectly capable of servicing a Rolex out there.

I know these are not for everyone, but...

I’d have done the same thing. Adds a lot of character. Makes you think of the stories that watch has and where it’s been the last 31 yrs.

You bought the one you liked best.

The dial you bought is interesting and I also find it appealing. My only concern would be that it is showing age related evolution and has not been damaged, which could mean other parts of the watch are damaged.

Most important you are happy with your watch! The rest does not count.

I don't like 'spider', 'stardust' ... dials, no matter how you name them, these are DAMAGED dials.

I think that’s why I like it. Reminds me Rolex is not perfect by any means (not that they’re known for perfection, lol).

What could cause such cracks? Water damage?

I assume it can be triggered by significant temperature gradients (= changes), intense UV and other external conditions that put mechanical stress onto the top layer of the dial, then it starts cracking, which will develop and can enhance with time.
