Can a sports watch be converted to a dress watch?

Hey guys,

I just got my Rolex Air-King-Date 5701 back from RSC and decided to do something different with it.

I decided to switch out the two-toned oyster bracelet with a black crocodile leather strap.

Now some of you may be aware the Air-King has one of the most complex histories of any Rolex sports model and is known for its robustness/reliability. Some even called it the "warrior watch"!!!!!!

That said, can this sports model be converted to a dress watch or would this be considered a "faux pas" to the purists?

I believe it looks stunning and can definitely look great in any formal occasion...

Thoughts?

Looks goood although I don’t think I would consider that a “sports “ watch.

Back in the day this was considered an oversized sports watch - believe it or not ; )

Any watch can be what the wearer wants it to be it's that simple.

Correct. No one else paid for your watch. You do with your watch as you please.

My old Air King was ahead of its time and most definitely a sports watch back in the 1950s. I’ve worn it with a Tux so pretty good as a dress watch too.

It looks good as a dress watch, the leather strap suit her very well.

This great little vintage Air-King is a dress watch, especially in this config with the gold bezel.
Its basically an Oyster Perpetual Date.

Fluted bezels have no sporting utility whatsoever.

People get too hung up on the labels “dress watch” or “sports watch.”

That watch seems appropriate for dressy occasions.

Has anyone ever walked up and said to someone wearing a rolex... that their watch wasn't right for the occasion? Your watch looks great. Enjoy it.

Although this reference (and the all stainless-steel 5700) was also badged as an Explorer Date for a while, both look more like dress watches than sports watches today, and could easily serve as such. I would be happy to own one, and would use it for any occasion or activity, depending on my mood.

Well it’s still one of the original sports watches...but it fits my dress watch needs!

And full disclosure, I’ve posted this shot on a few similar threads...I just love showing this one off!

Sport watches as dress watches? Never! That would negate an excuse to buy another Rolex!

Looks great. I've found however that most sports watches go with a suit or other formal attire without having to change anything
