Downsizing of a collection

I was wondering how many members have downsized their collections and were you happy or did you regret it? My collection is up to 19 and there are times I am content and other times I consider downsizing. Hard part is choosing how many and which. I can see downsizing to increase some desirable precious metal Rolex watches.

Wow. 19! That’s a lot. I’m sure you’re not the only one to have such a number but surely that’s too many? All decent pieces or a few SHITTERS as AC3 would say?!

I say keep and enjoy unless you really need to sell. Given how pricey Rolex prices have become, the same Rolex dollar budget can buy many pieces from other brands. From this standpoint, I think many of us are now have added others and have a bigger collection than in the past.

Have gotten rid of several without regret but they were for what I preferred but I really like what I have.

I do not need to sell any of them. I enjoy them all and wear them all. I change watches frequently. I would really have a hard time deciding what to give up and keep. I have traded watches for newer versions without regret but the collection I have now is really nice and thus the conundrum. My wants for my collection is a DD40, the OF 116518 LN and either a bluesy or a YG Sub LB.

I think you answered your question. If you enjoy/wear them all and can afford to keep them all. There is no need to downsize IMO.

I’ve done it, and can remember several other members on this forum doing the same thing over the last few years. I consolidated in the past to acquire PM pieces, no regrets doing that, although it created a desire for more PM ! I’m a believer in quality vs quantity, and even when I had between 8-10 pieces, I felt that was too many for me.
I’ve tried pretty much everything I’ve wanted to, Rolex wise and other brands as well. Other than future offerings, I don’t think I’d branch out much further.
5-6 quality pieces is a good number for me personally.

I've downsized and it was the best thing I've ever done. I'm at 2 daily watches right now, with 3 other I'm keeping for sentimental reasons.

I would say go from 19 down to 6-8 real super pieces....mostly new maybe one or 2 vintage

I've downsized before and never regretted getting rid of the actual pieces, but did find myself in a place where I just wanted to build it right back up because it felt too empty. So if you're doing it to get new pieces, trade up, etc. I think it makes sense but if you truly want a smaller collection then beware you will probably just start adding right back to it!

I have often wondered what my collection would look like if I had to downsize to just 3 watches in total.

Funny thing is, out of those 3 watches I chose, I own none of them, nor do I plan on purchasing them, at least for as long as I don't have to limit myself.

I downsized my collection a few years ago-Didn’t see the point in watches languishing in the safe unworn for months even years on end so sold the lot and used the proceeds to buy a Platona and a Patek 5711R-my 2 favourite watches from my 2 favourite brands-I’m done now and pleased I made the change.

I've downsized in the past. was up to 25 watches. Sold a few to fund other PM purchases. Some of those are gone as well. Paid down the mortgage. I'm now at 14

Just downsized from 8 to 6 and feel great - much easier choice every time and still enough diversity. I’m particularly happy with the way I did it: cashless swap of 3 watches (PAM359, Omega Speedy and Tudor GMT) which I didn’t enjoy wearing any more for a superior one (PAM335) which now fits ideally its place and purpose in the set.

I have downsized (moderately) and have not regretted. Usually turned 2 pieces into 1 nicer one. Can't say I regretted doing that ever - the nicer piece wiped out any regrets I might have had.

I was up to 7 watches at one point and THAT made my head hurt .... I can’t imagine 19

I’m down to four now and from my perspective, less is more.

In my case I truly enjoy each piece and I lose the guilt over having money tied up in watches I don’t wear “enough”

i would only downsize to move up in prestige. meaning ss for pm or one brand for a higher level brand.

unless you just want the cash.

I realized that I had too many watches (7 Rolex and 1 Bremont Terra Nova) and only one wrist (well two, but you know what I mean). I had watches I spent 10k on only to wear once every few months.

I said OK, just keep one, I chose the SubC as it's the only watch I wore consistently. I kept the Bremont Terra Nova becasue I like it but also resell value is just not worth it.

I don't regret it, 2 watches is fine and I don't miss the others at all.

I had:
Sub LV
GMT Pepsi
GMT BLNR
SS Daytona
Explorer II
Sea Dweller

All gone and hopefully in good homes.

Wow thanks for sharing. For me the hardest part would be deciding what to wear if I had collection like that. I assume you have to plan out what to wear for the week or month.
