Love in the photos / hate on the wrist

Mine are:

1. Daytona. They look so good. I obsessed and bought one and immediately returned it (d'oh).

2. Cellini moon phase. At this point I just know it's not going to work for me. I do still look at the photos though

3. Non rolex bonus: JLC reverso grande GMT. Another "d'oh" purchase I made once upon a time

none of these photos are mine

Not from me. My DSSD is my favorite. I understand the thread because I have many time found a watch to be appealing in photos, but not in actuality. I have also found the opposite to be true, which is why I won’t buy a watch that I haven’t seen in person.

I'm quite the opposite. I won't look at a watch that I haven't yet worn.

How’s that opposite?? And how do you wear a watch that you haven’t looked at?

I'll only look at a watch once it's firmly on my wrist. Before that, I'm sorry, but I'm very strict: sneak peeks are a complete no-no. Some people like to carefully prise open the box centimetre by centimetre, inch by inch, turn their head sideways, screw up their face, then when the box is fully open, the piece resting comfortably on its ample cushion, to stretch out and caress the dial, study the way the light bounces off the bracelet, the bezel, peer through the cyclops at the date, maybe even shake the box to start the movement, etc etc. Not me. I grasp the box, shut my eyes, feel for the watch, slip it on, and then and only then will I open them. It's like opening a Christmas present with a blindfold on. You hear that gasp? That's my surprise, my delight. A highly recommended method, why not try it? No watch, watch. No watch, watch.

Sweet jacket! I love that color. May I ask what brand and where did you find it? Your Deep Sea looks awesome with it.

Just the opposite... Photos of this reference typically do not reflect the amazing feel/look on the wrist.

This is why I miss the days of walking into an AD, trying on a bunch of watches, and buying the one I liked best. It sounds completely ridiculous to propose that idea now

Daytona - tried it on many years ago, too small for me. Never really given it another chance since then.

Speedmaster "Reduced" - same thing as the Daytona, not sure why I even bought it really, I should have known better but it looked great in photos. 38.5mm but felt like a 36mm. Sold it after a month or so.

Opposite here, sold my 116610LN for a 126660 DSSD. I'd love to give a new 126610 a shot though as my main issue with the old one was the skinny bracelet, but part of me thinks I should just give up on watches below 42mm as I have sold or passed on every one of them.

Tudor Ranger - This one was the only real shocker to me. I loved it when it first came out, drooled over it for months, found and reserved one which at that time was at the only Tudor dealer in California soon after the US relaunch. Made the 5 hour drive and could not STAND seeing my wrist through the straight end links on the bracelet. I stammered out some stupid apology and was out the door within 5 minutes.

I appreciate the honesty of this thread topic. For me, there are so many cool looking watches out there, but a number of them look bigger on my wrist than I’d like. For example, most of the Tudor Black Bay collection, including the very cool looking GMT. Rolex Skydweller and Yachtmaster II. Many G Shocks. The adage “try before” you buy is so important...too back that is not possible with a number of the popular watches out there.

This is at the Top of my list, was contemplating the leather strap version. What went wrong with it?

The grande reverso is very very small. I'm too used to rolex 40mm. And I have fairly large wrists.

If you can pull it off its such a cool watch. Especially on the bracelet which I think epitomizes the classic sports watch.

Its funny I also did a catch and release with that one. It looks so great that I still consider buying another one. I love all the amazing features all crunched into a small case.

The size and fit are actually not an issue for me. The killer was..... the chopped up dial. Its funny but somehow looking at the date window that was just plunked down right on top of the 7 made me crazy. I wanted to scream at the designers, just skip the 7!!! Why bother with it if 90 % of it is gone?!

The designers cut the "4" "5" and the "7" they left the "2" off the dial completely. Mechanical watches are an artistic expression, and that's the way the artist saw the dial. To me that's what makes so many brands interesting.

I’ve never actually bought a watch I didn’t like in photos, but have definitely tried a few on off the back off seeing photos that I liked.

A couple of examples for me are the TT blue sub, tried many times and just doesn’t work for me.

And the AP15500, actually very nearly bought this one without trying it on and luckily a local dealer had it in stock, so I tried it on and realised wasn’t for me straight away.

And strangely I still think they look great in photos!

Same. With 116610 prices rising a little more rapidly than TT, I considered a trade as I loved TT in pics. Tried it on and surprisingly I don’t even care for bluesy in photos anymore after doing so!

Had that with DJ41 two tone Rose gold with sundust dial that we were seriously looking at for my wife. Loved everything about the watch in pictures, but in person, it was just not as good as pics.

On my arm it was svelte, and the dial was not crisply legible. I could have pulled it off objectively, but given my personal tastes and larger than average wrists I just wasn't feeling it - at all.

I echo this sentiment. The Daytona is the Tom Cruise of Rolex in that it seems to have much more of a presence from afar (appears to be normal size on screen) than it does on the wrist (5'9 in real life).
