Anyone else starting early with their exercise plan for the new year ?

With lockdown #2 now past and gyms re-open, I’ve been hitting it with a renewed zeal.

Especially with Xmas looking radically different this year, and all the usual work/ family meals out cancelled, and even Xmas at home being massively cut back vs. normal; the typical festive pounds have zero reason to come on, only to be shed again in Jan/Feb.

So planning on staying trim right through and act like it’s already Jan 1st.

Anyone else already doing / planning the same ?

been a 'gym rat' pretty much my whole life so my 3-4 day a week routine keeps humming along. Trouble is I can no longer throw up 300#'s like I once did, it's all about lighter weight, more reps and cardio !

Things have not changed for me in the last 12 years without one single LB put on and should be the same all the way through the holidays and new year.. Holidays mean nothing to me when it comes to my strict and regimental lifestyle of food and nutrition... You are what you eat and thats a proven fact..:)

I really admire the discipline. I tend to be a bit seasonal with things and relax for Xmas + summer holidays,

Im sure a part of it for me is quite enjoying the extra focus needed to shift a few lbs.

Plan on strength goals in 2021 though, want to get back to some heavier lifting I used to do pre fatherhood, when free time went out the window !

I've been lagging for the past 2 months as other fall activities took precedence outside. Those activities are pretty much over now, so it's time to get back at it.

I changed up my routine to an advanced PPL involving 2 legs days, a push day and a pull day. I added a 5th upper day for higher reps lower weight. Almost a hybrid power building routine. I want to try and get on stage in the spring for men’s physique over 40. I have made quite the transformation in the last 10 years. Hopefully I can add 10 pounds of quality lean mass over the winter and be where I want.

Push, pull, legs is my standard format too when I’m in a regular routine. I find this to be a real optimum methodology for me.

Hitting legs twice is a nice bonus as you do it too.

Otherwise if only twice per week it’s full body on each occasion

All over it.

But I do this all year round. Never stop, but sometimes I’m more intense. Ratcheting up the intensity now. It’s time.

Same ole for me: run 5k every other day and some light weight training. Consistent and predictable, that’s how I roll.

I was hitting the gym regularly.... and now it’s closed... again. I have started running outside (as opposed to on a treadmill in the gym) anyone else like me find it MUCH harder running outside? On the treadmill, I can push it and do a couple miles easily, adjusting speed and incline to make it hard as I go along. I ran outside this morning, I was lucky to finish a mile before dying; and it wasn’t exactly a fast pace either. On the treadmill I start at 6MPH and work my way up to 7.5 (or even more) by end of the run. Outside this morning? I was lucky to do a 10-minute (6MPH) mile.

I felt the same way. You know what helped me? Walking. Try walking first. It sounds dumb. But it worked for me. I took 3 days and went for long walks with my kids. Then, I figured I give running outside a try again. When I ran in the fourth day, it seemed effortless. I think it has to do with acclimating yourself first. And, I used to experience the same issue you di being a treadmill guy myself for the last 8 plus years.

Well those paces kill any possibility of me and you ever doing a hike together. Nice work Paul!

I'm the exact opposite, I would rather not run at all than run on a treadmill inside. For me it's all about being outside and enjoying mother nature, gets my adrenaline pumping.

I got inspired by @daveathall’s simple setup of Concept 2 bike and rower. Got the bike last week and just waiting on the rower. Legs are so sore! Been jump-rope skipping every other day lately too, instead of running so much. I highly recommend the skipping; the impact on the joints isn’t very hard IME, but it is an intense cardio workout. Saving the running (and my feet and knees) just for the tennis court now.

Nice, I was thinking about getting the bike erg, but there is currently 7-8 week wait time. So we just ordered a less expensive spin bike from another company (Black Friday deal) for starters (mainly because my wife has been using a mountain bike on a trainer which is noisy as hell) This should be an improvement I hope.

We also have the C2 rowing erg... In have not been using it lately. Need to.

Apologies man, I somehow missed seeing this earlier! I remember now from the mountain biking thread that you mentioned taking up rowing for about four years after a nasty bingle on the bike—is that when you got the Concept 2 rower? I have another four weeks, I think, before my name comes up for one. The wait list for the Bike Erg and Ski Erg (which I passed up) were about three weeks faster than estimated, but I am in Australia, so I guess that’s neither here nor there. I love the bike and find it quite gruelling, particularly when I do interval sprints on it (my tennis coach says this is the best thing for tennis fitness). After that mountain bike thread, I am keen to get on the trails near my house, particularly with my oldest kid.

Stay well.

My apologies as well, first time I have read this thread and must thank you for the kind words about inspiration. I must admit, either of the concept 2 machines are very good on their own, but having both just takes it to another level, you will love the rower, having said that, I always find the bike erg the harder workout of the two.

I got the rower after a couple years on the team. We do Erg Sprint races in Feb every year, and we get the option to buy an erg at a discount after the race. That's what I did, even bought the one I raced on, ha.

I just put together the spin bike today, it's pretty good but the bike erg is much better (we used them in training on the team).

Be sure to invest in some clipless pedals and cycling shoes. Then focus on pulling up with your hammys on the upstroke to fully engage your leg muscles. Making circles with the pedals with consistent effort throughout the stroke is what helps prevent knee injuries. Spinning is a great workout but lots of people over stress their knees just by hammering straight down all the time.

Thanks so much Jason! Will go check out the local bike shop in the morning for this. Appreciate your knowledge on it.

Been getting 45 miles a week in on my mountain bike consistently even with the weather cooling down here in MI. Was getting 70+ in when it was a bit warmer. No plans on stopping or slowing down any further though. 24.4 miles in yesterday, hopefully another 20 today tomorrow and Saturday if the weather stays in the 40s. It’s tough to get started when it drops into the 20s though.

Try to keep a regular excerise regime all year round

Don’t see the reason to slack off Oct - Dec only to have to start back up in new year

Even in lockdown 2/ tier system in Scotland- still doing lunchtime walks/ cycles & a routine of light weights/ press ups/ sit-ups etc in house

My schedule has been turned on it’s head thanks to my oldest’ new year round soccer club. They’re practicing 3x per week outside. And including travel it’s a 3.5-4.5hr per time endeavor. I hope to figure out something better for 2021.
