Yachtmaster - first watch?

Hi, I am new to the forum and looking for some advice on purchasing my first luxury watch. For a couple of years now I was sure that I wanted a 36mm Black Roman dial DJ, but after trying on a used DJ (as dial has been discontinued) it did not give me the wow factor I thought I would feel when I had it on my wrist. Whilst in the pre owned dealers a blue Yachtmaster caught my eye, which I loved when on my wrist. I registered my interest in a blue YM at my local authorised dealer in London around 4 months ago, do you think I have a chance of purchasing a YM at RRP from an AD? As it’s my first watch I’d like to purchase new and have the experience in the AD. I’d appreciate any help. Thanks

I have that the blue YM and it is a great watch. It dresses up well or down. Very versatile.

Great choice. They can be had from greys with not much of a premium. Here’s the rhodium/slate dial with blue hands I love it. But you are better off starting AD relationship IMO though if you can. Keep following up. Good luck

When I first was looking at Rolex watches the Platinum Yacht Master seen in the post below is what really called to me. Because I wasn't used to spending large amounts of money on watches I ended up getting an OP36 and then a Sub. Since then I've owned many Rolex. In the end I ended up with a Yacht Master as my last purchased watch. I really love the watch and wish I'd bought it as my first one.

It’s a fantastic watch, and if you can get one from an AD you should absolutely do it. Everyone seems to think the Yacht-Master is freely available, but as you can see (you’ve waited 4 months already) these are becoming more and more popular, and harder and harder to find. When so many Rolex sports models are unobtainable, it’s a certainty that this one goes the same way too.

Expect value to increase sharply this coming year or two - exactly the same thing has happened with the Explorer II the last 2 years or so. Get it while you can, and enjoy it! They are the most underrated watch Rolex produce.

I just got my first YM40 Rhodium. I purchased through my local AD but I was not on a list nor did I have any purchase history with them. They had just gotten the watch in and it was unallocated. I was just fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. I would suggest working with several ADs if possible and certainly think you can get one without a considerable wait. Good luck with your search.

I put my name down on the waiting list in 1999 but haven't received "the call" yet.

I lived through that. I got one in early 2000 when a dealer pulled it out of the safe with a grin. Sold it less than a year later when a 16520 became available. Ended up buying another Yachtmaster the next year. It’s a great “only” Rolex.

My first luxury watch is a Yachtmaster. It opened me to a horrible world of spending even more money. Given the availability and secondhand market right now, the YM is the most 'bang for your buck' out of all the sports models. My local AD wouldn't even put me on the list for a Milgauss..geeze

I believe that you should be patient for a few more months and hopefully when lockdown will be over you should be able to get your watch.
Good luck!

I also just added a YM to my collection. I do have a very good relationship with my AD and did have to wait, but it was relatively short due to my purchase history. They are obtainable and with some patience would be a good way to start a relationship.

You have a good chance of getting YM since its not a hot SS model.
Good luck!!! and that's a great choice for your 1st.

It's a great watch and usually not too difficult to find. Keep checking in with your local ADs and one will pop up. Happy hunting.

Try multiple ADs and be friendly/genuine. I registered with 4 ADs for my first professional model. 3 I have not heard from to this day and the 4th one called me after a 4 day wait.

Good luck.

I have the rhodium dial and it’s a fantastic watch. Dresses up or down, wears perfectly! Like someone said, talk to a few ADs and be patient. I wouldn’t think you’d have to wait too long.

It has to be to your liking, some versions sing to some people that don't do anything to others. I'm a fan of usage first, which made things a little too easy...have fun finding the one...

I don't think it'd be too difficult to source from an AD. The YM is my first Rolex and it's perfect, IMHO.

YM is good choice and possible to get it from Boutique/AD with not too long wait.
